How difficult is it to replace a vaquero front sight? I'd like to replace mine with one with a bead. Would it be feasible to file down the front sight and silver solder a brass bead in place or create a bead with the solder?
I don't know what you would use for a replacement but, that front sight is silver soldered into a slot in the top of the barrel. I know this for a fact I had one fall out. If you were going to try to make something custom you can get replacement blades from Ruger and try customizing that first. You might just be better off selling the vaquero and getting the Blackhawk as someone has alredy suggested. The old models seem to be bringing almost what we paid for them since they have been discontinued as long as they are in good shape.
Jim March, who is a member of The High Road, modified his New Vaquero with a ramp front sight, and it seems to have worked out well. Use the forum's search feature and you should be able to find a number of threads and posts by Jim on this subject.
I bought 2 of these used ( 5.5" and 7.5") and the former owner filed them down for the load he was using but for me shooting 180 and 200 gr slugs over 6.5 grains of unique they shoot high not unusuable but I would like to get them down. I want to keep them and use them for traditional SASS. After research I know i could not put a bead on them but either want to replace them or prehaps build them up with silver brazing stuff I use so I could file them to where they work well for me then blacken them to comply with SASS rules. I'm pretty sure having dovetail front sights would be legal and i may have a gunsmith do that but I like to do what I can myself simply because I enjoy it. I realize that if I build up or replace the front sight I would probably need to do some refinishing but I like project guns. I have never removed shghts which were soldered in place before but I am adept at soldering and am sure I could safely complete the project. I appreciate the input suggesting selling them for Blackhawlks but i like the Vaqueros and have a lot of fun doing what gunsmithing I can.
I cut my 5.5" bbl back to 4.5", cut a dovetail in the bbl, made a new front sight from a dovetail blank...and at the same time I treated myself to fine target sights by milling the topstrap flat, and making my new front sight quite a bit thinner than the origional.
It had accounted for several deer, and I won a long range handgun competition with it last summer...stock sights can really be improved upon.
