Howdy:

I was thinking of getting a varminter setup on a budget.

My thought is to purchase one of the more reasonable single shot rifles and top it with a lower-end Leupold scope.

Something like:
1. Leupold Rifleman 4-12x40mm or Leupold VX-I 4-12x40 (~$280 + S&H)
2. H&R Ultra Varmint Fluted: .223Rem, 24"bbl, syth stock, (~$300 + S&H + FFL xfer)

Does something like this seem reasonable? Is a 4-12X scope in the ballpark?

Any other thoughts?

One thing to consider: you want a scope that will return to wherever you click it.

E.g., if you click up 1 MOA, you want to know that turning the knobs 4 clicks down will return you to zero.

The Rifleman does not have "clicks." But it does have a marked dial, and word is that it does return to where the dial says it will. That's a good thing.

I bought the NEF "Survivor" in .308 and topped it with a Simmons 3x9x40.
It has a 22" bull barrel and the last three shots I fired could be covered with a nickle. I am most impressed with it.

and here it is with a few of his friends, a Saiga 308, NEF .308, Bushy M4A3, Mossy "Persuader"

A fun gun for sure!

I have heard dudes get great results with a setup like that, i had a single shot in 17hmr, and it was big accurate. just remember, if you bench shoot with it, allways, keep your front support right up under the front hinge, as close as possible to trigger guard.

I have one of the lower powered Rifleman scopes (1.5X7?) and have been very pleased with it. Clear ,sharp, with decent adjustments that seem all out of proportion to the reasonable price. For varment use you will want more power but the rifleman is a great value.
I suspect that the package you sugest will work fine for you (not so good for the varmints!) but take a look at the Savage guns. I believe you are talking something like $125-150 more and the bolt gun will have lots better resale and the trigger is considered better also . A break open gun can be a pain from a solid rest or prone, with the bolt you can just lay there or sit there and chuch lead at them!
Sounds like fun no matter which way you go

Edit-Check SWFA- 4X12 Rifleman -$229.95

Second the bolt gun...

Not sure how much the single shot varminters run but i think they are around $300.

A great price to be sure, but if you are looking for repeatable accuracy, it may not be the best choice. You will always have to move the rifle to break it open to reload another shot. Not great for follow up shots or bench accuracy.

I'm not saying that the single shot is bad or that you wont have fun, just giving you something to think about...

How is the stock trigger on those NEF survivor rifles? I assume single stage, but does anyone know what weight they break at?

I have the ideal varmint rifle. A Remington Bull Barrel Varmint Special.
It has a K-10 Weaver scope and a Harris bipod. It's in 22-250.
I have shot a 5 shot group at 100 yards with it.The group measured
.172 in diameter. It's for sale at $400.00. I lost a leg a while ago,
and can no longer hunt.
