I am planning on building a vertical weapons rack. I found good plans, but they are designed to hold just the Mosin rifles. It holds the rifles on a 3" center.

Do you guys think that would be enough spaceing for a general rack, holding some scoped rifles? I am thinking about opening it up to 4 inches to make room for scopes.

I can't answer your question, but I thought you might find this link useful:

It's Google's free software for drawing stuff like woodworking plans. After spending 5 minutes on the tutorial, I found I could create fairly complex 3-D models with relative ease.

Lay the actual rifles on the floor and experiment with the spacing. 3" sounds pretty tight.

Unfortunately, you should probably keep nice scoped rifles in a safe anyway.

I used 4" spacing... 2 reasons... FIRST, wide stocked guns like my Ruger Race Rifle and Boyds target Stocked bull barrel target .22 NEED space, SECOND, I have a buncha SXS double barrelled shotguns...

I measured what I have, and the only one that is over 3 inches on center is the K31, and its not over by alot. I think it should work.

Remember that you will be pulling htese guns out and putting them into the rack with other guns in the slots to either side... the bolt handles and other protruding parts will end up rubbing against the ones next to them, as you do this... a 1/2" space or so EXTRA between the guns will make it easier to move them without contact...

I made such a rack for a closet at house we owned back aways, I used four and a half, even though quite a few of the long guns were lever-actions. As noted above, you'll end up doing a lot of taking 'em down and putting 'em up, and it's amazing how easy it is to bump or snag neighboring guns with a bolt or sling, or even the scope or front sight if you're in a hurry and not paying attention.
