The M-N will provide the boom and is cheaper to shoot then most centerfire rifles, but a .22LR is the best choice for new shooters on a lower budget.

I agree with the SKS or Mosin Nagant, if he absolutely will not get a 22LR. If he will, a Ruger 10/22 or Marlin Model 60 is my suggestion.

Make sure he realizes the significant difference in price between 22LR and a centerfire cartridge. If price isn't an issue whatsoever, I guess the SKS or Mosin would be great starters. Just make sure he can afford to shoot whatever he buys. The time spent shooting is what's gonna motivate him to spread the sport to his other friends.

He is pretty much against the idea of a .22 and is putting aside $50 a week... I'm pushing the sks but telling him about all his options that I (or you guys) can think of.
