anyone see the announcement? says same size and weight as the gen2 1-6
taking pre-orders at $1999 msrp, expect delivery in april
116'-11.7' fov @100
3.6" eye relief
FFP

vs

115.2'-20.5'
4.0"
SFP

for the 1-6x

looks pretty awesome on paper. if it still outperforms a red dot like the 1-6x on 1x, i'd say they have a winner.

Too bad it’s so expensive
I get it’s not terribly expensive but it’s just a little more than some of us can justify with the current budget.

That said, if things improve a little more, I can see getting one or two

I think the preorder price was $2k. The MSRP that I saw was something more like $2900.

Anyway, it certainly looks interesting on paper. I wonder how forgiving it is at 10x, though.

I appreciate good ad copy, especially well targeted - “Everything is in range,” is a pretty good campaign for a 1-10x, and the photos and videos of operators operating operationally with precision rifles and DMR type gas guns is well targeted. Strikes well for me - I have never liked an RDS on a rifle, and really like the idea of huge zoom ranges in scopes. I have somewhat questioned if the Strike Eagle line is a low cost market test for them. They don’t lose much in developing a low cost model, and they had the ability to test what sold better, 1-4x, 1-6x, and 1-8x. Apparently enough of us ask for the wider range and higher magnification, they made it happen in their top end line.

It’s a lot of money to saddle a $2900 LPVO onto your coyote killing or paper blasting AR, but personally, I’m excited about this one. If I can swing two of them sooner than later, I’ll stick one on my wife’s 416 Ruger, and the other on a 3 gun AR.

wow. that's pretty ballsy. i don't expect them to sell many when the NF is the same price, lighter weight and more durable. i mean, i'd take lighter weight and more durable over a little more magnification.

Course this is right after I shelled out for the 1x6 for my Rec10. Now the price is going to drop. 20200106_172632.jpg

Vortex is talking about $2k pricing on their instagram, so I’m wondering if the $2900 MSRP on the site is just to drum up excitement for the pre-orders?

me too. i like that reticle a lot

although ideally, it would have the option to light up the whole reticle

^agreed. But I’ve warmed to the idea of an illuminated dot option in an LPVO. If it could be 2 stage illumination, well, I like having my cake and eating it too...

It looks awesome

It is much much lighter than the gen ii 1-6

the reticle is great, very useable, I understand the desire to illuminate the whole thing (2 stage illumination perhaps) but I don’t know it it is needed, I would have to play with it in low light conditions

the reticle is an improvement on the nightforce in the center dot size

I think they are gonna sell a whole bunch of them and I’d like to have one, a great hunting scope and a great option for a carbine to dmr type system, I think it’s a potential home run

now, is there gonna be a 3-30x scope? 2-20? That would be a big deal for the precision rifle world

this is the exact question I would like answered. Along with how the optical quality is on full power, just for curiosity sake, that’s a lot of adjustment, hopefully the clarity is good at the high power.

i expect the clarity will be fine. it's distortion that i'd be worried about. it's highly likely that at both 1x and 10x there will be a fisheye / funhouse mirror effect on the edges of the glass. that stuff drives me nuts.

I meant distortion.

Been my major complaint against Nikons for a long time... I can’t stand that “lensing” as I call it at high magnification. It draws my eye, and gives me a headache.

i'm not an optical engineer, but i understand that getting true 1x is the challenge, and doing something like 1.1x is substantially easier. i'll be curious to see if the 1-10x is a true 1x

I noticed in that same Instagram thread I screen grabbed and pasted above, someone asked if it was a true 1x, vortex responded that it is a true 1x.

Kinda damned if you do, damned if you don’t, as I have been told. A true 1x can offer edge distortions and aberrations at 1x, even as much as seeing the beveled edge of the objective lens. Throw 1.1x, and it goes away, but then folks get fired up that it’s not a true 1x.

At ~1/6 the price, the Strike Eagle 1-8x has a lot of funky stuff going on at 1x, and it’s a true 1x as well. My bro-in-law runs his a little above bottom to avoid it, then says he gets seasick from the slight disconnect between real and slightly greater than 1.0x. Can’t win for losing with some folks.

The 1-6’s are some of the best LPVO on the market in Terms of optical performance across the magnification range including 1x. I think vortex know that this will be a dud if it doesn’t perform at least as well as the 1-6, most of their market are folks who already have the 1-6 or are considering the nightforce nx8 1-8, so i would bet it is a great optic that blows away most of the sub $1k LPVO to include Trijicon, Burris and others

After spending some time with a 1-6X Razor, I really liked it, and am hoping the 1-10 will be of similar performance. The older 1-4X Razor that I picked up used for $700 about 3 years ago has served me well but having another 6X of magnification would sure be nice.

The price is what it is. While I'm sure it costs about the same to build one of these as a 1-6, the amount of R&D had to be pretty substantial. I'll wait on the sidelines for a used one to pop up for under $1K before I take that plunge. The cool part is that it is going to push others in the market to introduce similar products which will keep putting the pressure on price and performance. Maybe Nightforce with have a 1-12X next year

I wonder what has changed in the world of optics that they can now get an 8 to 10x zoom rather that the 3 or 4x zoom range we used to have?

I have a VX-6 on my deer rifle. Kinda the best of all worlds
