Ok guys I bought a mid 2000,s VXII 4x12x40 in very good shape so here is my question what do you think it’s worth?
it’s the matte finish with the duplex reticle

eBay has them in the he 4-500 ranges

It is interesting how much is being asked for those scopes. I checked sold listings, and one with target turrets sold for $310, I assume those asking for $500 for the standard scope are not getting that.

I looked at new Leupold 4-12 X 40's and this one has one has a side focus and big external knobs to adjust windage and elevation:
Leupold Rifleman 56170 4-12x40mm Rifle Scope and it sells for $230 including shipping. The VxII scopes require coins to adjust the windage and elevation and you adjust parallex by grabbing the scope bell and rotating the lens. I have the older scopes and they tend to also have duplex crosshair and I prefer those with dots or mil markings on the crosshairs.

So what is there about the VxII scopes that would make them more valuable than a new scope?

It's a 4-12X40, not 4X12X40. Are you sure about VX-II vs VX-2. The VX-II's are an older scope replaced by the VX-2 which is a better scope. You can get a new VX-Freedom for $350

If it is a VX-II id say $100-$150. About $50 more if a VX-2.

for some reason online prices for the vx-2 and vx-iis tend to be on the high side. I don't sell Leupolds locally when they come on guns I always post them on eBay.

I've not sold a vx-iis, but I've sold vxs, and vari X's for about double what I'd think they should go for.
while I haven't looked in a while, and those 4s and 5s seem high, I would expect at least 300 for a vx-iis in good shape.
With that cash I'd go buy a new leupy or something else

Most of the asking prices on ebay represent greed. As you know Ebay gives free listings about twice a month, therefore the cost of putting an ad on ebay can be nothing, and imagine the return if somone gives you $1,500 for that old scope you paid $100.

I'll admit to that.
I've bought quite a few things for less, and sold for more than I think they are worth on the bay.
Price it high fair, and your usually in the low range for a popular brand.

It's a great place for finding deals if your willing to wait, or know which "off brand" stuff to buy, but leupys command an unusual premium, and I don't recommend anyone buy a used one from ebay unless your willing to wait and ambush a good deal.

spend another 14.00 and send it back to leupold to have a check up, leupold will send a report back with the scope listing what they did to it if any thing. that will raise the value of it to a buyer, and insure its in tip top working order.

I think that was directed at the current rate those things go for, not your buy specifically lol.

I’m thinking you can get NIB VX3’s somewhere in the $300-375 range. Why would I pay more for a used cheaper scope?
vx-3is are going for 300 for the 3-9s right now. the 4.5-14x40 non focusables are 450+

The side focus vx-3is start at about 5 and go up.

the old vx-2 I found on Amazon as still in stock was 6 some odd....why?...I dunno.

If this is a compact, which I forgot existed (I was assuming it was the AO model), It's still probably a 250 dollar scopes on eBay in good to excellent condition....again, why? I dunno.
