I am looking into the Walther G22 rifle for an auto-loading .22lr shooter for when I can't afford to shoot my handguns.

Anyone have any REAL LIFE experience with them that can give me some feedback on them?

G22

If you like the way they look, than have at it.
other wise
get a 10/22
I personally like the marlin 60 for casual plinking (something about loading up that tube magazine).

These guns are fun, fun, fun. I love my G22, they are really fun to shoot, just pick one up and you will see what I mean. The way the gun feels in your hands is different from other 22 rifles. I also recommend the Walther P22 pistol.
A lot of people will talk about poor accuracy & reliability compared to other 22 autos but my P22 & G22 have been 99% reliable and accurate enough to be fun at the range.

Are they as much of a pain to break down and clean as I have heard?

Oh yeah, the G22 is a pain to break down. I pretty much run a bore snake through it and call it a day. I will break it down every 1,000 rounds or so and really clean it, this has not affected reliability though, it went the last 1,000 rounds without a hiccup.

I think the P22 is very easy to break down and reassemble. The manual doesn't tell you how to do it though so some people have a problem. Once you know to use the guide rod extender when you reassemble it, no problem.
