I have a friend that has a Walther P-38 that was brought back from Europe. It's original WW II and has the Nazi holster. Condition is probably 90-95%. There are some unusual markings that the local gun dealer cannot identify. How can we figure out what it's worth??? TIA

Well, you can get an idea from somebody here by posting a full description.
There is no such thing as "a Walther P38." They were made over a 7 year period by three different companies with many little variations which made no difference if you were a German fighting Americans and Russians, but which make a world of difference to a collector 60 years later.

Of course the only way to know what it is really worth is to sell it.

Well, from other posts and ads, Nazi bringbacks are selling in the several hundreds of dollars range, so that is an incentive to do the work.

Need help understanding my P-1

I just took delivery of a 1964 Walther P-1. I fired it and at 10 yards only dropped 3 out of 50 rds into the 10 ring. In 30 years of firing pistols, I have never been so pleased. Now I want to know more about my pistol. The markings are as follows: "Carl Walther Waffenfabrik Ulm/Do" The reciever, frame and slide all bear the same last three didgits of the serial #. The other side of the slide bear the marking, "3/64" It was advertised as being a, "Unissued" firearm. the extra magazine was wrapped in a very old type tape and was in a sealed plastic envelope. The holster is black leather flap type and I cannot imagine how it was worn because there is no belt loop. The cleaning kit has a "Chain type" pull rod. Can anyone fill me in as to the details of what is now my favorite pistol?

Hi, Jim W.,

You got me on that "There is no such thing as 'a Walther P38.' " statement.

The P.38 was made by other companies (Mauser, Spreewerke, and a bunch of subcontractors) but a lot of them were made by Walther (code ac) and the pistol was designed and developed by Walther. Some people do call all P.38's "Walther", just as many people call all Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 pistols "Colts". That is incorrect, but there definitely are Walther P.38's just as there are Colt M1911A1's.

Jim
