A Son should outdo his father....But not with the father's own pistol. My Son so far outshot me with my own CZP01 that I was determined to improve my groups. I thought I'd practice my trigger control with a .22 autoloader to save $ and so bought a Walther P22 for $239.00 new.

My wife and I shot about 100 rounds tonight after picking it up, just to try it out. It exceeded my expectations.

My first groups at 10 yards were a little ragged, mostly because it was so much fun to shoot! I think Walther hit the ergonomics nail on the head. It functions in all manners like a full sized autoloader, but the negligible recoil makes it a joy to shoot. My wife, who is not an avid shooter, was very pleased with it (she comes with me to keep me company and out of trouble, like buying too many pistols).

The Walther comes with 2 sizes of grip panels, to adjust to different sized hands. We left the original grip panel on the pistol, as my wife has very small hands. Mine are quite large, but the pistol still felt comfortable to both of us.

After several magazines and calming down, my groups improved to about 1.5", again at 10 yards. We were shooting Remington Gold bulk pack LR HPs.

Having not yet read the instructions, I did not try to adjust the sights. Our groups were about 1" low and 1" right. The pistol comes with 3 front sights, for height adjustment. I'll try them at the next range time. The rear sight adjusts left to right with a screw mechanism. It looks simple, if you read the instruction manual.

We had 1 FTF, again, as a result of not reading the manual. Walther recommends seating the rounds in the magazine, ala tapping an M 16 magazine on the helmet. Looking into the receiver, it was obvious that the top bullet was mis seated. Removing the magazine and tapping it settled the top round into place and it functioned as advertised.

All my autoloaders are SA/DA. The Walther is, as well. This was a pleasant surprise in a low cost piece, allowing us to keep continuity in the operations of all our sidearms.

My only complaint tonight was the difficulty in reassembling it after cleaning. The return spring is quite flimsy and permits binding of the guide rod during reassembly. Next time, I'll use a pilot rod to seat the guide rod, which should eliminate this.

If anyone is interested, I'll go back to the range with good ammo, adjust the sights and let you know how it shot under better conditions.

I think this is a well made, pleasant way to improve the bad habits I've picked up over the years. My Son may be in for a surprise the next time we shoot 9mms together.

Good going! From the sound of things, your son should be surprised! Plus, that Walther sound like a good addition ;)

By the way, what length barrel did you get?

Walther P22

Thanks 10-Ring. we got the 3.5 " barrel.

By the way, my oldest Son is 34. We've been shooting together for 26 years. The little boy is 30 and we've shot togethr for about 22 years.

Walther P-22 Longer Barrel

Hi 10-Ring,

From what I've heard, the 5" barrel does not tighten the group appreciably. 2 people told me, however, that the added mass of the suppressor does help to stabilize the piece, to the advantage of the group.

One other note, the sights are similar enough to my CZ P01 that they were immediately comfortable, even to my ancient eyes.

Regards,

Thanks. The P22 is on my wish list, but a few priorities have popped up this year so my accumulating has been put on hold :(
