Hi all,

I picked up a used Walther PPS for a good price a while back. The only problem is that it's a 40 S&W, and recoils pretty sharply (at least for me). Can this gun be converted to 9mm by a simple barrel swap? I'm assuming that the 40 S&W magazine would feed 9mm ammo.....

Stephen:

Sometimes you get a quick answer, and sometimes you don't. It al depends on who happens to be on line and if they notice your post. It's also the start of a weekend, and that can make a difference.

Anyway, to address your question. I doubt that changing from .40 S&W to 9mm Para. could be done with a simple barrel switch. The .40 slide has a larger breechface, and the extractor is more outboard to work with the bigger round. The magazine lip width will be different too, as may be the ejector. In theory by changing all of the parts the conversion might work - only S&W can tell you that. But it would be expensive to accomplish, and you could probably save money by selling the pistol you have, and putting the money you get plus what the conversion would cost toward the purchase of another gun more in line with what you want.
