I bought a bunch of gun socks for a couple dollars a piece used. I ask why he was selling them and he said his guns were rusting in them? I've never heard that claim before about them . Anyway when I got home and looked at them. They look like they may have been washed. I know some of them are silicone lined or whatever. Do you think washing them compromised them in any way? Does anyone else ever wash theirs?

I am sure they guys guns rusted due to high humidity or sweaty hands and lack of a rust preventative, not because of the gun socks.

After we got our first house the wife got her 22 from her father. It had sat under their bed in a case (yea I know different) for years....read decades. It was cleaned before being put away, but when we took it out it was a bit rusty.....well I guess I should say the outside was clean...its innards about as crusty as could be....I was amazed it still worked.

Humidity moisture can collect on anything cool.

There are a few ways to clean stocks.
I f you have an old oily stock, a cleaner and water can be used. You don't want to soak the stock and you have to allow it to air dry for 3 to 4 days before you apply anything to it.
You can clean a stock that has a hard finish with BLO or Howard's Feed N Wax. The oil will break down the dirt and then you just wipe the stock down with a clean rag.

I'd NEVER store a gun in a gunsock period. They attract and hold moisture and rust guns. Soaking them with some type of silicone or oil may delay the process, but they are a bad idea all around.

SOCK not stock
That's what I get for reading without my glasses when using my phone.
Gun socks absorb moisture. Most new gun socks are silicone treated. As they age and get used they don't work as good.
For long term storage apply paste wax to the metal and wood. You can also use Howard's Feed N Wax. Once the wax has dried you can store your guns in a new or old gun sock, or a gun case.
Paste wax works great if you have humidity problems. Another plus is that dust does not stick to wax like it does with oil.

Hmmm? Never thought about it holding moisture? That a good point to ponder.

I live in Oregon and my muzzleloaders are all in gun socks, not in a safe. I couldn't find a small safe that was tall enough.

Anyway, no problem with rust or corrosion so far...

Never had a problem with a gun sock and moisture . Keep all my old guns in them. No rust so far. But there are in a safe with climate control.
