So I bought a used wasr 10 about 9 months ago and Ive taken it to the range about 3 times, now it's starting to rust on the inside of the receiver (under the rails /in other small crevices) and also outside (in crevices on the sight mount). Ive only used tulammo and that's suppose to be non corrosive and I gave It regular cleanings . I use hoppes for cleaning. Any suggestions? This is my first rifle. Edit - there is also rust on the face of the bolt carrier and in the Gas tube.

It may just be cosmoline working its way out of every crevice on the rifle. The previous owner may not have run it hot enough/cleaned it less thoroughly to get all of the goo out.

My Zastavas were drowned in it.

I forgot to mention rust in the Gas tube and on the face of the bolt carrier but also what would you recommend for cleaning and lubricating an ak variant?

Check the THR gunsmithing forum, at least two threads on rust and how to treat it.

If you are getting rust from the ammo clean it as corrosive. I have a lot of milsurps I shoot with old corrosive ammo. Get a bottle of "Windex" with ammonia( or generic window cleaner). Strip the gun down and spray the inside of receiver, bolt, bolt carrier, ect liberally to flush away the salts and wipe it down. Then clean with Hoppes or what ever you want and lube. Semi autos need more cleaning than bolt actions because the corrosive fouling gets all over inside the gun. Just rember "corrosive" is only salt that comes from the primer that gets on the metal. Its water soluble. "Windex" is water with a little soap that helps it desolve and flush the salt away.. Balistol mixed with water is another good cleaner.

Sounds like the ammo is corrosive. You need to get the salt off the gun. Hot water followed by a hair dryer & then some oil will work. Ballistol mixed with water spayed on the gun will work too.

I was thinking about getting a thick enough pvc pipe for the receiver and doing the balistol mix but I didn't think the corrosion was from the tulammo I was shooting since its not corrosive . Now I'm just worried about getting off the rust that's showed up. It's nothing major, just light surface rust but it's in spots that aren't easy to get to like gas tube

You said you use hoppes for cleaning, what else do you use? Hoppes wont stop rust generally. You still need to use oil to protect the metal. If you are in a high humidity climate it is especially important to use a light coat of oil on all metal parts after cleaning.

OO steel wool will make quick work of surface rust without scratching or removing bluing (once you degrease the parts you wish to buff). Don't be afraid to use several pads- they are cheap enough and get "dull" fairly quickly. I would field strip and pack rags into any crevices where you don't want wool to accumulate. Afterwards, I wipe down with brake cleaner to remove the remaining dust and grease- avoid getting this on the wood bits though, as it will remove the finish. Use compressed air if any wool falls into the weapon.

For an AK, I use wheel brearing grease on the "loose" parts like the bolt lugs, carrier rails, and hammer face. A few drops of gun oil on the "tight" parts like the trigger\hamer hinge pins and firing pin channel.

Very important! Do not leave any oil or grease in the chamber or barrel! This may result in excessive pressure and Kaboom!

I finish up with a liberal coat of spray on silicone- available at any auto parts store. Won't hurt the wood or plastic bits, so feel free to be generous with it- wipe off excess now or , as I do, leave it slimy until the next range session.

But the root cause of your rust problem is more likely a humid storage environment than corrosive ammo- get a nice tactical softcase to protect the gun and keep your mags organized too!

Good luck, the Wasrs are nice AKs which don't get enough respect- much better guns than the RAS47 or PSA!
