I appreciate all of the great input guys. I think the Pelican 1200 series in bright yellow is in my future http://www.pelican-case.com/1200.html ... This should fit my Ruger P89 I think (I only want one gun, and thats the one.... think it will fit?) at $45 it comes greatly recommended from you guys and others, and that's not a lot for a great case....

I couldn't find the Waller and Sons cases mentioned.... links? smaller and lighter are key....

I ended up dumping my yak in the ice cold water with my Ruger in the deck bag and had to break it down completely to dry it out... *sigh*... deck bags are water resistent, not water proof...

IIRC, last time I was in the BWCA, firearms are strictly prohibited, and the Rangers aren't shy about searching.

I've had three encounters with black bears up there, and all were resolved peacefully by surrendering whatever food the bear wanted.

One of the three times the bear wanted our fish, so we threw a few raw fish in his direction, no sale. He walked right in and proceded to eat our fried fish, the batter and all the tarter sause we had.

I guess it proves the old saying "what does a bear eat? ... anything he wants.'

IIRC? (assuming that means "If I Remember Correctly") I don't know when you were in the BWCA last, but you are incorrect as of the last 10 years at least. Firearms are allowed in the BWCA, as is shooting for recreation (although that is asked to be kept to a minimum), and hunting, as I have done so on several occasions.... hunting bear in particular, so yeah, I've encountered a few bear myself up there... lol.... but they have never taken a single thing from my camp (proper food procedures are integral to avoidance of bear in your camp)... but they come every time to my bait station.... :) ... I have been stopped by Rangers on several occasions, but I have never been searched in over 25 years of going there. I think that they could, as Game Officers (although they are not DNR, but Federal employees, so maybe not), but they have all been very polite, checked the permit, and left us alone.... are you sure you're talking about the same place I am?

I don't intend to scold you, but I agree with JohnKSA that you did the abbsolute wrong thing training that bear to "take whatever he wants" and should have chased the bear off with a very loud sound (might I suggest a firearm next time ... now that you know they are legal... :) )

Yes, it was probably 1982 or so (it was just the BWCA back then).

I also agree about feeding the bears, but when you're in a tight spot with nothing but heavy woods (his domain) or the water (canoes), etiquette goes out the window (and for the same reason you want to carry).

Other times we have driven them off.

I'm a big believer in toting a gun in the woods, but all the Gov't restrictions make it tough in a lot of the most scenic places.

Glad to hear you can carry, have fun.

PO2- you make me feel old.... because I realize now that I have been going to the BWCA since around 1980 (longer than I initially guessed).... I am not sure what the firearms rules were back then, because I didn't carry then, but I do remember my dad carrying when we went up there back then.... just not sure if he knew,or cared, about the laws regarding. As of the last 10 years I have done a bit of hunting up in the BWCA and am familiar with the rules, so I am certain on the current rules. Thanks for the input nonetheless... better to check first than to find out the hard way.... the last thing I want is a firearms violation....

CraigJS- I did check out the starlight cases, but they seem pricey and a bit overkill for my application... I don't intend to protect my guns from being run over by APC's.... the biggest issue is that it is waterproof/floats, the second is that it is small, third is that it locks,.... Pelican seems to cover all of that for less money... and they have bright yellow too!!

But thanks for the input there, those do look like great cases....

They're $34.17 at Cases4Less.

Why not use a 50 cal ammo can with styrofoam lining glued in? Less than 10 bucks, will float any hangun that'll fit inside, watertight seal, carry handle to tie onto your canoe/kayak. Used these many times on floating trips, never had problems. Never tried a 30 cal can, one of these might work too, you can always try it in your bathtub.

demented- that is a great idea, but those things are HUGE for my little 9mm....

Thanks for the link hksw
