I'm looking for a relatively short, inexpensive, reliable, double-barrel shotgun, constructed of s/s or an equivalent rust-resistant finish, having a synthetic stock and preferably having internal hammers, double triggers and chambered in 12 gauge. Anybody know of a shotgun that at least comes close to these specifications? Thanks all.

You can't have inexpensive and a double barrel. Just entry level double barrels are well over $400.

$400 is way too cheap for a quality double gun; in that mode adding a zero gets into the decent quality SxS realm, but that type of gun is not what the OP wants

The gun you want does not exist at any price. To get a double that would be acceptable would have a 4 digit price tag before refinishing with a weather resistant finish.

If you want reliability on a budget a pump is your only option. You can buy a cheap double and play John Wayne if you want. But for 1/2 the price of a cheap unreliable double you can get a quality pump that you could bet your life on.

This came to mind and is the closest thing I can think of.

That's pretty darn close, DeepSouth. But if I insist on "stainless", I might have to settle for a cheap pump as jmr40 suggested. I just liked the shortness in terms of oal sxs and ou shotguns offer, everything else being equal.

Hell, I don't know of a PUMP or such in stainless. Ruger made a short run of Red Labels in stainless, I've heard. Second best option IMHO is a camo dip finish, very tough against rust. You have to clean the gun, of course, but it has held up well on my Mossberg for 20 years of salt marsh and bay hunting out of boats, kayaks, and on foot. One can have a Spartan/Baikal or old Savage or such dipped. You can also just past wax the gun, seems to work fairly well. I am paste waxing all my field guns now, even the camo 500. Since I'm a hunter, I'd camo dip even a stainless gun to keep the glare down. Stainless would flair ducks left and right, I'm afraid, if the sun was out.

BTW, there is absolutely NOTHING unreliable about my Spartan in the 5 years of my ownership. It's a tough little gun. I refuse to believe that it's the POS everyone tells me it is. Hell, it's a simple break open shotgun, no shell elevators, magazine latches, pump handles, bolts, just a simple break open. Single shots MIGHT be simpler with a hammer. I have an H&R 10 gauge that's pretty simple and didn't cost 5 figures. Why should adding a barrel make it less reliable? Mine works. I have a Sarasqueta I paid 100 bucks for 42 years ago that still shoots fine. The salt marsh and boat rides did a number on its looks, but it still shoots fine. I have an old Iver Johnson break barrel single shot I have no idea HOW old it is, only that it was discontinued in 1947. It's tight as a drum. No, I've not used it much since my youth, though. I haven't used that old Sarasqueta much in 25 years, either, but it was once my do all hunt everything shotgun. I used the snot out of it when I WAS using it.

Stainless steel is real hard to find in any shotgun. I just read his budget and double barrel. I was like good luck.

Thanks everybody for your well-considered replies. I'm giving some serious thought to getting a six-shot, 12 gauge, Mossberg Model 590A1 "Mariner" pump and be done with it.

Well, I think that's about good as it gets. :D The Mossy is a solid weapon. Wax it, keep it lubed with corrosion X. It shouldn't age too badly. I've done the say with 500s. If you're worried about rust, the one choice I'd avoid is a Remington Express model, a rust magnet. Most folks I know that hunt the salt marsh with 870 Expresses sand and spray paint the things and touch 'em up occasionally.

I think if you can find a (discontinued) Red Label, that's as close as you will get. Of course, they're O/U doubles, not SxS, but they were available in stainless/synthetic. I'm pretty sure they are single trigger guns.

Browning made a stainless O/U a few years back - came with a laminated stock - friend has one - designed for duck hunters and others who wanted a weather resistant O/U, that would be one way to go

I took my Spartan 20 duck hunting a few times. I paste waxed it before hand. I got out in a pothole and got stuck one teal hunt and had to swim in (don't hunt that pothole without my kayak anymore). The gun got dunked and muddy. It cleaned up well and not a spot of rust was evident afterwards. This was brackish salt marsh water, too, nasty as it gets.

I don't know of a stainless shotgun, but I wouldn't want it without a camo dip anyway for ducks, too shiny. Paste wax seems to work well and I learned of it on this very board. :D

I can tell you, my old Mossberg 500 has a camo finish and it's held up well in the same environment duck hunting for 20 years. Camo dip finish is rugged and rust resistant and can be done to any shotgun.

The only issue with paste wax are those areas, especially INSIDE the gun, that you might have missed. Hopefully a good teardown and cleaning, followed by a good lubrication saved the day afterwards
