This was very informal. It was in a pasture and the clay targets were hand-thrown by my nephew, like a frisbee. It was harder than I thought to hit the targets. It's good training, since the targets were thrown at all kinds of angles.

It was really to check out some recent shotgun aquisitions for functioning. Here's what happened with the following:

Rem. 870 Wingmaster made in the 70s. 12ga., I/C fixed choke, vent-rib barrel. (This is one of my favorite shotgun actions.) Hit okay with it. I didn't start really hitting until later, when using the Benellis. This had to do with form, rather than gun type, though.

Benelli NOVA 12ga., 26" bbl. (don't know which choke was in bbl). This belonged to someone else. Was able to hit fine with this one. I think it was mainly because I started following the target... The gun shot great and was a pleasant surprise. That big ejection port was easy to throw shells into, one at a time.

Benelli NOVA H20, 12ga, 18" bbl, extended mag tube, recoil reducer. Cylinder bore, I think. Hit great with this one. Shot very naturally for me.

Verona LX505-12 O/U. 12ga., 28" bbls, I/C and I/M chokes. Hardly hit ANYTHING with it. Frustrating. Don't know why it was so hard to hit with this gun. Will definitely have to investigate. (Interesting note - I've never shot an O/U, before. It felt kind of funny to fire two rounds without manipulating a pump or having a semi-auto action cycling.)

Winchester Super X1, 12ga. Modified fixed choke, vent rib barrel. This gun is in near-mint condition, but was bought used. The gun would only fire one round and the trigger wouldn't reset, for some reason. It would chamber the next round, just wouldn't drop the hammer. ? Only fired it a few times - don't think I hit anything. Was concentrating too much on the action not working properly. Will be tearing this one down to check it out. Beautiful gun, though.

All in all, it was a lot of fun. We went through the 135-count box of clay targets in no time. I didn't realize they would go that fast. Also went through more than 150 shells. Taught my 13 year-old nephew how to load and shoot a shotgun. He hit the thrown clays at about 60% of the time! I couldn't believe it. Of course, he really like the Nova H20. He thought it looked like something the Terminator would use.

I had bought an MTM hand thrower, but the clay disks were too large to fit. I'm planning to join a gun club that has skeet, trap and SC ranges. I'm looking forward to getting more involved in the sport.

Amazing how quick one can run thru a box of clays - huh? Sounds like fun had by all.

The speed of the targets appear fast, when you go to a skeet field they are approx. 55 mph. Watch for a bit the clays of another squad before you actually shoot, this helps to adjust the eyes and human computer. With time they will not "appear" not quite so fast. You will not rush the shot, or feel rushed and the proper handling skills will turn thme to powder.

From your descriptions, I wonder if some guns fit you better than others, and hence the better results. Fit comes out real quick when targets fly, what is not apparent when just mounting at a gunshop,or at home becomes so when stuff is flying fast.

SX1, humm, honest I've never ever seen that happen on any SX1, mine or countless others. I have seen the gas rings installed incorrectly and the gun would shoot one and not recycle. I checked the gas system, corrected order and the gentleman was a bit embarrassed, no biggie, the gun run fine from then on.

With no shells and hand cycling the bolt will the hammer drop? [shouldn't]Cycle by hand this should cockthe hammer, then trip trigger- should fall- Does it?

Remove trigger assembly, safety off ,with hammer "back/down" trip trigger and hammer should spring forward ( I catch this and slow by and, I don't want it snapping without doing so btw) . Next check bolt assembly see the grooves,it should ride freely on its on weight when tilted fore and aft.

Dunno, I'm curious. I have run mine hard and not cleaned for an easy 3K rds in all kinds of nasty conditions...yes these SX1 gas guns will run 3k and more with no problems. Wipe exterior, maybe lube from time to time, but I may put 1k rds a wk through mine at the time also. Get back to us on that . I'm puzzled.

Thanks for sharing a good time!

sm,

Thanks for the info. The SX1 is in outstanding condition, so I was a little surprised by the failure to drop the hammer. It would chamber the next round, but the trigger was "dead". It wouldn't move - it wasn't forward. When I got it home, I found out I could move it forward to reset when it would do this. I'll take it apart and see what's going on.

I did notice when I bought it, the hammer seems to drop a bit light compared to any other shotgun I have. I thought maybe the former owner had stored it for years cocked and the hammer spring had lost strength. Maybe the interior is hampered by hardened lubricant or something.

I'll say this, though. This gun has a very good trigger. It has NO takeup, no creep and no discernable overtravel. I've never felt a shotgun trigger like it. I'm not sure if that's especially good. I don't know if there's any tolerance for dirt in there. Looks like there should be just a little takeup and overtravel.

I haven't had time to really study it, but will be doing that in a day or so. Maybe today.

Thanks again,
Steve

Steve,

Did you ever get an owner's manual? If not PM me with your address if your comfortable and I'll make a copy and put one in the mail.

I'm guessing your trigger guard is metal like mine, soak in mineral spirits , then blast with CRC Brakleen.

I sure hope somebody did not clip the hammer springs ( inside or outside one) thinking they were doing a trigger job.

I have seen these things cocked for a l-o-n-g time, like a 1911, they will run...yep just fine. I'm hoping it is just crude,a pc of shot, seed...etc somewhere in group and not a shade tree smithin' job.

ROFL :D :D
TR, well .. it wouldn't be the the first time someone tried to do something like that would it? We have both seen some new guns trying to emulate a classic and failed terribly...and charged a pretty penny to boot?

Best...

Those mtm plastic throwers work tons better in warm weather than in cold.Normal for the clays to fit pretty tight in 'em.
If several of you shoot 'em a lot,or plan to,there's a host of traps for the consumer out there.....even 12v opoerated/magazine fed models.
Sure sounds like u've just had a lesson in gun "fit". Very important on a shotgun.
Usually takes a box of clays per shooter per outing for informal clays....they do get used up fast.!! :)
