Red Halliday at West Coast suggest using FMJ data for loading their plated bullets. I've picked up some .45ACP 230gr and 38 Special 158gr plated. Have any of you chrono'd their bullets and determined that they launch at FMJ velocities? I just shot their 158's with 3.2gr of Titegroup. I assumed that they were loaded to lead standards. Very nice shooting, but couldn't chrono indoors.. and the darn rain seems to know when I'm off.

Check these loads against a published source before using!

Gary H,

Check these loads against a published source before using!

I've been shooting a lot of WCB in .45 200 gr RN and 230 gr RN. I launch the 200 gr at about 835 fps, in front of 5.8 grains of Win231 and the 230 gr at about 740 fps in front of 5.4 grains of Win 231. These are my practice and IDPA game loads.

I've also shot the 115 gr 9mm at about 1100 fps and the 38 spl. at near normal velocities, but I don't have that loading information with me at work.

Always load plated bullets to the FMJ loading info, they are jacketed, it's just a thinner jacket than the others, so it should be treated as a jacketed bullet.

Zak, I'm gonna have to try that recipe (I know........I'm on my own if I try internet recipes, lol).

It's right at the max margin and might be a good load.

If I get over 4.6 Tite Group with a 230 grain jacketed bullet, I print over an 8 inch area.

4.2 Tite Group with 230 grain FMJ is what my 1911 likes.

Thanks, Zak.

I agree with g56...for what it's worth.

The 200gr PRN / 5.1gr TITEGROUP load is one a bunch of IPSC guys shoot. Between myself and the guy I got the recipe from, we've shot over 30,000 of them. Titegroup is cheap.

edited to add:

This load can be turned down to 4.7gr TG so a little less recoil. Alternatively, you can keep the OAL and powder charge the same and use the Berrys hollow-base 185gr bullet for very light loads.
