Western Field model 40N

Is there anything particularly special about the above model pump 12 gauge ?
I have one, not very impressive but I've never had my hands on one before ....

It is a Montgomery Ward branded Noble Manufacturing Model 40. They were economy guns. Noble went under in the early Seventies. Fairly straightforward pedestrian pump gun.

I can’t see why not, provided it is in good working order. You may want to put a box of shells of similar weight to your intended home defense shells to make sure all functions as intended. Then, enjoy!
