Hey Guys,

So I am pretty set on my semi auto handgun arsenal and I have gotten the itch for a revolver. I have told myself that i am just going to do it more or less right the first time so i have a budget of as much as $1000.00.

My personal requirements are:

Chambered in .357 magnum
Double action
maximum of 3 inch barrel
Stainless steel

I am looking at the Smith & Wesson Performance Center 627-
http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...75655_757896_757896_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y

but i am more than willing to hear any other suggestions.

Thanks Guys,

MWD
It hasn't seemed to catch on, (I have owned 44 mags 41 mags 357s 38s 44 specials 32s 25s) but,, My Rhino has impressed to total crud out of me. Max 3 inch barrel? I think mine is 2. I believe they come in SS. The pistol is definitely different. I shot mine the other day and put 300 rounds of mags and 200 rounds of 38special through it. It was fun and my hand wasn't tired after shooting for an hour. It shoots with less flip recoil than ANY and I mean ANY mag I have ever shot. It kicks I would have to say like maybe a large framed 380 or maybe a 32.
My 2cents. Like I said I am very pleased and impressed with it. Plus my friends who have shot it want one also.

I have a 3 inch barrelled SP-101, that will be the last gun to go. Ease of carry, I can shoot 200 gr. corbons if needed, just a good all around gun. You will find what you like and it sounds like you're impressed with the 627. I don't know much about it, but Hey it is a Smith. Good luck in your search.

An 8 shot S&W would be sweet!

Just for kicks, i'll share my 640-1 pro that i've been digging lately, although I need to take an updated photo with the badger walnut stocks its wearing now, plus i've ditched the moonclips.

I also second the wiley clapp Gp100 combo, thats a fine firearm. My 4" gp100 moonlights as a wiley clapp from time to time.

Good luck with your purchase!

Although you won't find it in your price range, a pre-lock "bloodwork" 627 with a short barrel is about as cool as they come.

I had a sp101 and did not like just having 5 shots and my middle finger hurt like crazy after shooting a lot hitting on the trigger guard.

Try and rent an 8 shot before you buy. I've owned 6, 7, and 8 shots and now have only 6 shots. There is a difference, other than round count.

I'm curious because I'm thinking about an 8 shot. Obviously weight and balance will be different, timing will be different. What else are you refering to? Looking for education.........

460Kodiak, if you had said the .460 sets off car alarms at the range, that I would believe.

Yep, I was joking. It is still hilarious though. I kind of want to shoot one of those emergency survival 460's with the 2 inch bbl. That has to be out of this world. I'd never buy one unless it was dirt cheap though.

Ah I also lust for the 627 but with different features. I prefer the 4" barrel length and fluted cylinder.

The 4" barrel balances the gun better, is not harder to conceal than the 3" (the bulk of the concealment comes from the cylinder) and has slightly longer sight radius.

It can be carried concealed but you are going to have to work at it. IWB means big oversize pants and as strong belt. OWB means same strong belt, high ride holster and a jacket/coat.

I do not see the 686 having any real advantage over the 627. They are both large and weigh about the same.

I think you should go with your choice. It's a high quality revolver and it meats all your requirements. And, the Performance Center revolver are what all S&W revolvers used to be... (8 rounds of .357 Magnum won't hurt either)

I did a Bing search and came up with 4 places that have, in stock, 3" 686 for between $676 and $741.

While personally I can't imagine owning a revolver with the IL and filled with injection-molded parts, but they seem to sell and you want one.

Best of luck.

While it's not a M640 Pro it is a special run gun by Accusport. I'm posting it because you mentioned Badger Custom grips. Mine are Rosewood and came with the revolver.

Enter the Dinosaur.

Given the choice looking for a truly good .357 revolver I would not be looking at the new stuff. I would be looking for a like new used S&W Model 27 or Model 28 with a target trigger and hammer as well as adjustable sights. Another .357 I like is looking for an early 60s Colt Python.

Went to a small NE Ohio gun show this weekend with my brother looking for a Colt SP1 AR early 70s vintage. Never saw the AR but started talking to an old timer with a collection of early Colt and S&W revolvers on a few tables. Nice stuff and there in the middle was a 1961 vintage Colt Python in a 4" marked $1,700. The guy was willing to drop to $1,300. The revolver was mint. I know the show he is at next week and I may get it.

Anyway, given a choice? I seek out the minty older revolvers. With a $800 to $1,000 budget I would be looking for a used and minty S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman or similar or an older Colt Python.

Just My Take...

I don't know if I can put it into words. Particularly with the 8 shot the gun felt noticeably different on the last round than on the first, probably because of the weight shift is my guess. I don't think it's that big of a deal but if a trial is possible it can't hurt.

For $1000?

Option 1-- New: 1 Talo GP 100 3"

Option 2-- Used: 3 Security Sixes or 2 Smith 19/66.

Option 1 gives quality without quantity.
Option 2 gives quality and quantity.

If it were my money?....Option 2.

I picked these on account of their availability. Any old Smith, Dan Wesson, Colt 357 6-shot with 2-3" would be an option (if you can find one).
I do not trust the guns made by the Saf-T-Hammer Corporation.

I liked my 4/10 purchase of a re-issue 2 5/8" PC627 UDR that, when I sold an old friend that fall - I bought another PC627 UDR with the funds. The first UDR is my range gun - and has displaced my previous favorite .38 plinker - my new 4/08 4" 627 Pro:

IMG_4599.jpg

You likely won't believe this - but - the snubby UDR's orange ramp is just as fast to pickup in daylight as the HiViz equipped 627 Pro is - and actually balances better, too. They come with a great trigger - out of the box - that yields no ftf's with Winnie primed ammo, either. The only thing they both needed was a larger grip - and the PC Shop N-frame walnut grip, ~$50 +s/h from S&W Accessories, is perfect - for me. Believe me, it's a fine choice - and it comes moonclip ready, too. My 'sufficient' protective round is the .38 Spc +P 158gr LHPSWC, aka the 'old FBI load' - they are moonclipped above. Also, after ten years of making - and my buying - S&W IL-equipped revolvers - with no problems (In fact, S&W has yet to spend the first dime defending themselves from such lawsuits!), I could care less whether a new revolver has an IL - or MIM parts, for that matter. Highly suggested as a great revolver.

One option im currently considering is taking a used 686 and sending it off somehwere to have work done and come in at a similar budget to a new mim/ils performance center.

Just for giggles suppose i get a Scratched up 686 for 550$ (cheapest ive seen locally) and get cylinder and slide to do the following

Item Price Quantity Actions
SR004 - Action Job on K - L - N Frame (includes spring kit) $126.95
SR034 - Remove Hammer Spur $55.05
SR100 - Convert to Double Action Only $49.37
SR036 - Install Fixed Trigger Stop (hole not drilled completely through trigger) $54.20
SR024 - Radius and Bevel All External Corners - Edges and Front of Cylinder $94.21
SR012 - Bead Blast Refinish Stainless Revolver $83.43
Total $463.21 *
comes in close to the 1000$ budget (id keep 2-300$ for any problems they find and contigencies)

I just wonder what you get? Ive had custom work done on my trap guns but had shot others that had similar work done first and new what i was getting. With the revolver im kind of blind as to how it would feel when im done!

Every time I've tried this approach I've kicked myself for doing so. Unless the final product is something you absolutely cannot find in the marketplace, trying to sneak up on it through the back door is risky and may end up costing considerably more. You are right to wonder what you will get, when you are holding in your hands you will know.

Tony the Tiger,

I love your Wiley Clapp Model 640. Where did you get it and for how much?

The 640 pro snubby featured in my post is currently available from S&W and you can get them around $600, they feature no internal lock, a fluted barrel, tritium 3-dot rear and front sites. Its not a Wiley Clapp model though, I was jokingly referring to my 4" KGP-141 Ruger GP100 as a Wiley Clapp because Ruger gave me a pair of Wiley Clapp edition grips for it as a personal favor. The true WC GP100 has a 3” barrel and features a bead blasted finish and fiber optic sites.

Archangel, sweet grips :) I dig the rosewood knife as well.

I own an SP101 and a 686. If I were to purchase my revolvers over again, I'd be buying an older S&W, no question.

I've had little luck with either the new Ruger or S&W (a trigger that hangs up on SA and a canted barrel, respectively).
