Any reason (other than availability of ammo) not to use a 16 gauge as a home defense gun?

What is the availability of 00 Buck and plain slugs in 16 gauge?

Most 16 ga. buckshot loads were #1 buck, IIRC. Never saw many slugs for them, but they're still out there - http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/index.php/cName/16-gauge-slug .

As usual, most any gun will do for HD if the shooter will do, 16 ga. is no different in that regard. It might be more difficult to find ammo in as wide a variety of options as in 12 ga., but there are useful choices available.

I saw a fair selection of basic slugs and some #1 Buck

Midway has a pretty fair selection of ammo for the 16 gauge so don`t let that stop you, if that is your choice go for it...............

A lot of people think #1 buck is the best option for HD over 00 or #4. If 12 and 20 work, I see no reason why 16 wouldn't.

My understanding is that down in South America, 16-ga. is THE shotgun to have....I guess it's like our 12-ga. is to us.

I keep 4, #1 buckshot handy for my SxS. I doubt anyone could still be standing after catching a load from one.

The Academy stores in DFW are carrying way more 16 gauge than they did just a few years ago.
