What are some good ways have a concealed but accessible handgun while driving?

I have a friend that stitched a universal type nylon holster to the side of his bucket seat with a flap that matches the seat and covers it all. Presentation is lightning fast though transfering to his IWB can be tricky in crowded areas.

I keep mine between the bucket seats in my Ranger, or in the tissue holder in the center console of my explorer. Both locations are a nice, tight fit, with padding on both sides to protect the weapon.

Ditto what SpaceManSpiff said. If I'm going to be driving through a troublesome area of town, the Bersa comes out and gets tucked under the right thigh.

I drop my G17 in the door pocket of my truck, you'd have to look for it to know it was there, and even then you have to look through the tinted back glass. The white outline on the rear sight gives it away, if not for that I doubt you could tell it was there. Great location for my left hand, but it isnt accessable with my right hand. With a little more movement the Kimber carried at 4:00 IWB is.

My truck has a full bench, with an armrest in the center. About a week after I got it, I got tired of getting my hand stuck between the seat and the back of the cab, so I cut the fabric behind the armrest out making it more accessable.

Due to some broken supports on the driver's side of seat frame, I got a flat piece of 14 gauge (.075" thick) galvanized sheetmetal to replace them (also made one for the passenger side that isnt broke). While doing that it dawned on me that I could also mount my fire extinguisher and maglight on the back of the seat. And after I got it cut it hit me that it would be a pretty good place to mount a holster. I guess I'll give it a try, if it doesnt work, the glock goes back in the door pocket until I find somewhere else.

Fanny Pack

I have a small vertical fanny pack, like a camera bag that carries the pistol vertical like a holster. I place it between the front seats in the car or truck and leave it un-zipped. All I have to do is reach in but no one can see the pistol by just looking in the vehicle. When I leave I take it with me and wear it or if I have to leave it, makes a nice way to store it in the trunk.

Right now I jam my 1911 between my passenger seat and console (240SX, the gun isn't even accessible if I place it between the driver's seat and console), and I carry a regular towel on the seat that I can toss over the gun if I need to. One of these weekends I'm going to pull the seat and sew an old Uncle Mike's holster to it for a more "bump-friendly" setup. Usually I just keep the towel over it to prevent paranoid people in a high riding SUV from looking down and calling in a "man with a gun," but if it's a long trip or I have a passenger, I just leave it uncovered until I have reason to do otherwise.

Also, as for passengers, since it's there on the passenger's left, I always make sure that I trust the person riding shotgun with a gun before I put it there. If I don't, I just toss the gun in the "misc. crap" tray molded into the driver's doorpanel.

"It's a shelf that attaches to visor mount points and spans the cockpit across the top of windshield."

I knew a guy that had one of these, it felt pretty "in your face" being in the truck with it. The visors seemed a bit in the way also. Others may like them, but I didn't feel any desire to own one after seeing it. I don't think the guy that had it was crazy about it either, but it was a gift from his wife, so.......

I have one of the bellybands that Gunslinger was selling many years back. Even though it's called a bellyband, it's really designed to be worn around the mid-chest area, so it makes a real easy cross-draw when sitting in my vehicle.

Don't know if you've considered this before but I recently started using a smartcarry holster. www.smartcarry.com. I think a similar product is called thunderwear but I'm not sure. It keeps a weapon secured in a holser that rides directly in your midline completely below the beltline. I use a PM9 which is pretty small and don't have any trouble at all. Total concealment without any problems and I don't use a cover garment of any kind.

When driving or seated your weapon is directly in your midline. You just reach into your pants to grab it. Not as fast as a standard holster and I wouldn't want to carry a full sized weapon but very efficient for what it's designed to do.

It might fit your needs.
