I want to bring some deer in fast, my hunt's next month and I havent really been able to put a whole lot of time into scouting yet so I figured it would be best to bait them in and just wait. I made some stuff I read online its 70% table salt with 30% maple syrup do you think that would work? I was also looking at "deer cane" "mineral blocks" and "evolved habitats rutn apples" what do you think would work best and when should I set them up? now or a couple weeks before the hunt? Also should I put real apples out or just plain table salt, anything else I should consider?

Thanks!

It is my understanding that it is illegal in AZ to hunt over bait for deer, but it is legal to put bait down. From what I hear plain salt works the best, dig a hole, pour some salt in in, and mix it up good with dirt. I guess they like it best that way. Personally I have tried the deer co-cane mix twice and haven't had any luck with getting deer to hit it, so I kinda gave up. I might give the salt a try one of these days. It's more fun to hunt 'em up anyway. A month is still plenty of time to find some deer. Also if there aren't any deer in the area, salt won't do you any good, so you have to scout anyway. What unit are you hunting in? If you want PM me I might be able to point you to a spot, I've hunted a fair bit of AZ.

I was just reading through the game manual and all it says is that it's illegal to bait bears, I didn't see a thing said about deer so maybe I'll give them a call later and ask.

Jake, I'll be hunting in the Prescott area, (unit 17B) and I have seen some deer in the spot I'm going before so I'm about positive that they're in the area. Have you hunted that area before?

I have another question for Arizonans, is it legal to carry my Glock with 15 + 1 rounds in it while hunting in addition to my rifle or am I only allowed 3 rounds?

As has already been noted,if there aren't deer already in the area, baiting will be a waste of time in the short run. Deer won't leave any area where they have all they need ,food ,water, cover, bedding. Start early,at least 2-3 months in advance of the hunting season, plant something designed for deer forage(Bio-logic,etc) and the deer will find it by the time hunting season rolls around. I think scouting is more beneficial than baiting. If scouting isn't possible how will you know WHERE to put any bait? Baiting is illegal here so I don't know what might work well on such short notice.

We keep out a salt block year round (and they love it) and spread cracked corn out with a seed spreader in a couple of areas. Too late to plant clover, but the first two might work for you.

I keep the feeder full of corn and add a little high protein from the feed store now and then. Buddy gave me 13 bags of corn, about 75 lbs a bag, from his harvest this year, so I'm good for a while. :D What feeding does is keep 'em there and give 'em nourishment through the hard times, like this year with the drought.

Scouting your area is always best, but a salt lick of some sort has been a proven winner to attract deer, apples in an area that has none is a waste of time, molasses on top of your lick? why not, a sweet and salty combo may be just the thing. Get it out ASAP, good luck!

No, that is one of the few areas I have not hunted. I've heard the deer population is good up there in the right spots though. Thanks for the link on baiting deer, in the regs all I could ever find is that it's illegal to bait bears...but another AZ forum that I visit has many conflicting posts about its legality. Nice to see a confirmation from G&F, maybe I'll try putting out salt again.

Yes it's legal to carry a sidearm with as many bullets as it holds. Good luck on your hunt, post up some pics if you get one.

I've used cob corn, cracked corn, cracked soybeans, food plots with rape, peas, and clover. I've also used gardens, they seem to like gardens. In SC.

If you want to go long term, get them on a spot during high stress parts of the year. Put out corn and hay during a bitter winter, then periodically refresh the same spot through the year. They become accustomed to finding food there and will browse through more often.

Make note of what they browse on locally, then fertilize the area/plants in late fall. Deer seem to be able to find what's good for them.

i use sheep nuts, grain and whatever windfall fruit i can get my hands on. Recently i got 5 big sacks of apples from my daughters school and used them, they were a favourite. If it is your own ground try planting a couple of apple trees

If legal to bait in your area, then I`d go with a bag of apples. Cut those babies in half and spread then around. When the aroma hits the wind current and there are deer around, you should see results. There are exceptions to everything of course. :)

Do you guys think the deer will still be attracted to apples even though there are no apple trees in the area?

I also ordered some deer cane from Cabelas and plan to set out some table salt a little later on btw.

Thanks Jake! I'll be sure to bring my Glock along for the hunt.

jiffy.. with an itty bitty hole in the bottom.. takes them forever to lick it clean..

DONT DO IT!!!! IT IS BAD FOR YOUR FREEDOM....
