Be careful when buying ammo for your rifle!!!! The earlier 8mm Mausers had a .318in bore while the later had/have a .323in bore. This is why most US made 8mm ammo is underpowered. When the 8mm Mausers were first brought into the US, some people were injured trying to fire WW2 .323 ammo in a WW1 .318 rifle. They didn't know the difference, they just went to a store and asked for 8mm Mauser ammo, and "KABOOM!". The US Govt mandated that US produced ammo be loaded to lower pressures to prevent actual kabooms in the event ammo got mixed up. Therefore, US produced ammos such as Winchester, Federal, and Remington, are loaded for 170gr bullets at 2100 fps, similar to a .30-30, and most Euro ammo is loaded for a 196gr bullet at 2650 fps, similar to a .30-06 with the same weight bullet.
So now to answer your question. Depending on the ammo, you can have either a .30-30 or a .30-06 in the same rifle. I use Sellier & Bellot for hunting, which is about half the price of US made ammo and twice the bullet. Wolf also has a good round and is even cheaper than S & B, but is hard to get though. S&B and Wolf are both available from Ammotogo, J&G Sales, Sportsmans Guide, and other ammo distributors.
