I think few would argue that the 1911 isn't completely ubiquitous in realm of firearm designs. They're everywhere and everybody and his brother makes 'em. You can't pick up a gun rag without finding a 1911 someplace in it, usually on the cover. Obviously it's a solid and reliable design which explains its longevity. But it would not be as nearly ubiquitous if its patent had not expired, thereby allowing every Tom, Dick and Harry to produce one. It is the blueprint for every aspiring gun maker who has no blueprint of their own.
A similar argument can be made for the AR platform.
So... here's the question for your consideration (and entertainment)...
Of firearm designs (assumed to be) still under patent, what designs do you feel would become as ubiquitous as the 1911 if/when their patents expire.
For me, my immediate thought runs to Glock.
