What do you do to defend the second amendment and your gun rights?

Rather than fight with people who've made up their mind, I spend my time working with those around me who are openminded. I present the image of a responsible gun owner to friends and family in the hopes that those who are anti or liberal in general will remember me when someone starts frothing about evil gunowners (it's already working). I do not hide my status as a gunowner from my neighbors (hard to do when I'm coming and going with gun cases, etc for the range or hunting trips), but I do not flaunt it either. I treat it like I treat my love of photography, or any other hobby. I want people to think of the quiet, respectable, family man when they think of a gunowner, not the black clad rambo at the local gunshop ranting about the UN.

I've gotten my dad into shooting and reloading. He's talking about getting his CCW, but time constraints are interfering with the training requirement. I've recently gotten my brother into shooting. He bought an AK, is looking at handguns for CCW, and has joined the NRA.

That, and I will raise my children (ok, only one right now) to be pro-gun, if not pro-freedom. They don't have to be gunnuts like dad, but they have to accept the freedom to bear arms as an absolute right.

One method, and it’s fun, is to take them to the range. Introduce them to fun shooting. Have them shoot easy targets with a .22. Treat it as a public relations event.… Just let them have fun.

So far, no one has accepted my invitations. My own brother simply isn’t interested. A newspaper editor also declined, presumably because he didn’t really want to learn anything about the subject he was editorializing.

But I’ll keep trying.

Went to law school (I figured that if you have both the pen and the sword you don''t have to worry about which is mightier) NRA member, and hopefully, with the help of many on this board, a junior Senator from California. Gimme a couple of years on that last one.

Ok, this weekend's plan:

Last night I stopped and talked to our Leg. Committee Chair for a while and discussed our position on some upcoming legislation. Wrote some responses to the e-list regarding upcoming training sessions we're putting on for legislators to qualify them for carry permits (so far, we've got 12 legislators and staffers on board, plus a reporter for the Detroit News taking the class. Go us!)

This morning: Wrote an update to the membership telling them all the nifty things we're up to and asking for money and help. Wrote to one Democratic representative who completed our survey last fall and didn't get an acceptable rating but who didn't answer all that bad, either. I'm hoping its ignorance, rather than malice, and would really like him to take our class. We'll see. Wrote to the printer asking for an update on our stuff so we can have it for the Deer & Turkey Spectacular next week (which I will work 3 straight days at.) Answered some questions regarding message board registration. Right now, I'm writing to firearms manufacturers begging for donations for our upcoming events. I've done 11 so far. Want to do 36.

(After this, I'm taking a break to do laundry and taking a shower and help the kiddo with science and run errands.)

Then, when I get back, I have to create a flyer for upcoming meetings for one of our chapters. And work with a guy who is scheduling an advanced handgun class for us, including a range visit. And call the club to make sure we got board permission to hold the class where we want to. Then delivering the flyers since I'm up there anyway At some point, I also have to print out some membership packets for people and try to make it to the post office. And make sure I get some payments done.

Then, I'm taking another break and going out to dinner with a friend.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try not to do anything gun-related and spend the whole day with my kid and cleaning my house.

I've decided I'm going to start posting this stuff. I'm not going to do it for the "yay, me" affect, because I do this stuff *every week* but I'm cranky and hoping I guilt someone into doing something themselves. :)

So, there you go. :)
