What do you guys consider a good group at 500 yards

If I could HIT anything at 500 yards I'd be happy!

I will say that my Captain told me he got a 2 inch group at 500 yards with his customized bench rest Savage last week. I've seen his shooting - he can do it.

No kidding, me too. Or even had access to a range where I could TRY.
Put me in this club. I've never been able to try that far. :(
I'm pretty sure it would be embarrassing though.

What's the purpose?

For target shooting, as small as possible.

For hunting, the vitals.

For wartime sniping, an 8" pie plate

For wartime anti-material, probably a foot, depending.

For plinking... maybe a 12-inch gong?

shooting a custom 300 win mag with a nightforce so seeing/hitting the target is no problem. I shot a 2.75 inch 5 shot group. I was pretty excited about it. Still working on the accuracy a bit I hope to get it sub 2. This is prone at a nice range. I will have to dig up my original post about the gun.

Pretty much the way I feel. And yet you see hunters on the various hunting channels shooting game animals at 500 yds plus.... They must all be the cream of the shooting crop. I've taken shots at woodchucks at that range and further with little success. But it was sure fun!

I would be extremely pleased with myself hitting an 8" pie plate at that range. Yeah, with a snub nosed revolver... right. :)

This is what i'm working with :

Remington 700 Action
Bell and Carlson A5 Stock
Nightforce 5.5-24x55 NP-R1 Zero Stop Scope
Krieger #10 MTU cut to 26" with 1 in 10 twist
Near 25MOA base
Badger max50 Rings
Jewell Trigger
Badger Bolt Knob
Harris Bipod

There's not much accuracy shooting done at 500 but at 600 yards there are plenty rifles today doing two inches or less with a few shooting in the one inch area for 5 shots. I'm not one of them but do know a few that can do the deed with very specialised equipment.

Depends on the cartridge and the number of shots, but if we're talking .308 Win (or NATO equivalent) I'd say with no wind ... 0.5 MOA. With variable wind under a significant time constraint with the wind ranging from 0mph to 12mph or even greater ... 1 MOA is excellent. I'm assuming that the shooter is using a front bipod and rear bag similar to F-TR.

Caveat: A tiny group that's 12" from the point of aim doesn't impress me. You need to hit what you're aiming at which is a lot more difficult.

I try to do most of my shooting from a bipod these days. I think it's the most practical way to shoot for me. Although I've done a good bit of sub MOA shooting from a bench with either a rest or sandbags, I strive to stay around MOA with a bipod.

If I stay in that range on a day of shooting, I consider that good.

Only F-Class, Highpower and Service rifle mid range prone course matches! 300 yards, 500 yards and 600 yards. We had a match last Saturday.

Shooting for score isn't always conducive to shooting small groups. The objective for hunting, military applications, steel challenges or F-Class is to hit what you're aiming at. If your first shot is a miss or in the 8-ring, you don't try to put the next shot on top of it. I checked my records and my smallest group at 500 yards was 0.980 MOA (5.133") with a score of 146-2X (15 shots for record in 15 minutes). I've been shooting at that particular range for three years and we just don't see zero value wind days. The wind is always variable and always hard to read. The range is being extended to 1,000 yards and it's going to be a joke trying to put shots inside 10" with a .308 Win.

For me personally, it is being able to consistently put all shots into 12" using irons.
Which I still have trouble doing sometimes, Kentucky windage is a guessing game.
For me it is simply a matter of 12" being Minute of Man, Bambi's vitals or nailing the 12" gong on the range.

Here is my target at 600 Yds. With my Savage 10FCP HS Precision, Nightforce 5.5-22x50, 308Win hand loads ...168gr Hrn Amax,Lapua Brass, 41.7 Grs Varget
