We all know how some 22’s can be finicky when it comes to ammo.
I bought a Taurus TX22 last week and found it to be a fun pistol to shoot. I had only shot Armscor High Velocity ammo in it, which shot pretty good, but I wanted to see how it did with a few other types of ammo.

Here’s the selection of ammo I tried out today. That’s 8 different brands and 18 different types of ammo.

Here are the targets. I fired five rounds each from seven yards. If I didn’t get a good group, I shot a second five shot group to make sure it was me messing up and not the ammo.
I got flyers with the Federal Champion.
Both of the GECO rounds did grate with the Semi Auto doing a little better. FF6BB626-8F5F-40F8-984F-612C578CDA34.jpeg

The Federal American Eagle and Premium Hunter Match didn’t do so good.
I got great groups with the Aguila Super Extra, but had a flyer on both groups.

I thought the Winchester Target would have done better.
The Monarch Brass is Academy Sports store brand packaged by Armscor.
The Winchester Wildcat did much better than I thought it would.

Now the Remington Golden is over 30 years old. That one flyer may have been me.
The CCI Clean is a red coated bullet, and boy does it stink when you shoot it. Don’t ask me why the first group I shot was so bad and the second group so good. Could have been the smell.
I was surprised at the CCI Mimi Mag. That’s five shots with one flyer.
The Winchester High Velocity didn’t do to bad.

CCI Standard Velocity has shot great in every gun I have tried it in and the Taurus TX22 was no expiation.
The Remington Subsonic didn’t do all that great.
I am really liking this cheap Armscor ammo.
Federal Target Gold Medal did very good.
And the last group, lower right, is CCI Stinger. It did very good but noise and recoil were much more then the others. I don’t think I would want to run a lot of it through the Taurus. Plus it cost to much for just plinking.

Here’s a pic of the CCI (Stinky) Clean.

All of the ammo functioned without problems. I only had two failure on LRHO. One was with the CCI Stinger. But I think it was me riding my thumb on the slide release.
The Taurus TX22 is a great little pistol and a great shooter. If you haven’t had the chance to shoot one yet, you should.

So what ammo does your TX22 like munch on?

Hey Gunny! My TX22 has eaten everything I've put through it, probably about a dozen different brands from CCI to some 30 year old Remington gold box (sticky) stuff and everything in between. The latest 500 round pack I finished was some Herter's bulk stuff from Cabelas.
I'm now working my way through a 525 round box of 36 grain Federal "Ultra Rimfire Target and Range" I got pretty cheap. Seems as accurate as anything else I've tried.
I'm over 2000 rounds so far and the TX22 just runs and runs. I haven't tried anything so far that was wildly more accurate than another brand.
The only ammo that has had any issue at all was some Thunderbolt subsonic. I just didn't cycle it 100% of the time but in all fairness, none of my other .22 semi autos run it as well as the TX22. I'll be saving the rest of those rounds for the revolver.

As a side note, I ran the first 1000 rounds through it straight from the box - no cleaning, no lubing, etc. At just over 1k rounds, I cleaned and lubed it well and found no buildup in the barrel. I'm really impressed with it.

30 years ago 36gr Remington GB was the best "cheap" ammo. But It got so bad before the Obama panic that I totally quit buying it -- too many duds and blown case rims. During the panic a friend gave me a 1400 round bucket of the 36gr GB and it had improved enough that I'd buy it again if I can't get the 36gr Federal bulk packs.

Seems you were smart enough to not try Remington Thunderbolt :) Leads terribly in all my pistols.

I've been impressed with my TX22. Its a nice analog for a full sized pistol, and 16+1 is a lot of fun on the steel plates.

Lol now you tell me Wally. Yep the thunderbolts loaded like crazy in only 32 rounds.

But it fed them, fed auto match, some older blazer, aguila 36 plated and some minimags.

Mine has eaten everything I have had on hand. Federal Automatch is my preferred .22 ammo but I also have CCI Mini Mags, Thunderbolts, Blazer (not sure what type) and some other stuff.

The only .22 ammo mine has had issues with, actually ALL of my 22s have issues with it Herter's (Cabela's) brand bulk .22. Too many duds, I've had better luck with Federal bulk.

My TX22 shoots anything, new, old and cruddy, light and slow, maybe once in 7-800 rounds, has it missed a beat. My G44 is not as tolerant.

IMG_3703.JPG I've only used Mini Mags, Golden Bullet's, CCI Blazer and CCI Quiet in both of mine. The Quiet. of course, doesn't have punch enough to operate the TX22, although I understand a 45 Grain bullet will. The others loaded and fired with both pistols without any problems. This pistol is an absolute winner. My two start from a 6000 Ser.# and the second has a 64000 Ser.# both barrels are fine with no chattering, bad rifling or excessive leading. Let me say I own Glocks and they're fine guns. I carried a G21 until I retired. The TX22 is a better pistol than the G44. I own a lot of .22 handguns that are decades old and are better than the Glock offering. Glock will sell a lot of G44's to dyed in the wool Glock fan's, but looked at objectively it's a win for Taurus and a lose for Glock.

Hi all,

I am really new to guns. I just ordered a TX22 and some (embarrassingly expensive) Armscor 22 LR Precision 36 Grain High Velocity Hollow Point. I just wanted to verify that this ammo is appropriate for this gun. It's not going to damage the gun in any way, right?

A second question -- what about dry firing this gun? As a rimfire I'm under the impression I shouldn't dry fire it and it seems there is no consensus on good 22 snap caps.

Thanks

The ammo should be fine. Not all rimfires are created equal when it comes to dry firing. It's been awhile since I messed with my Tx22, but I seem to recall you have to press the trigger to get the slide off. If that's the case then it is ok to dry fire.

I forget his name, but the guy that designed the trigger for the TX22 said that it can be dry fired.

I prefer to run CCI Mini mags in mine.

My TX has eaten everything I've fed it from Remington standard velocity, CCI standard velocity, Stingers, etc. The only ammo it will not cycle is CCI quiet.

Armscor 36 gr CPHP shot pretty good for me as well producing around 2" groups at 25 yards out of GSG 1911.

Some of those ammo looks old and you know powder does deteriorate over time. ;)

I have noticed age of ammunition being a factor during 20,000+ round test of 20+ brand/weight of 22LR the past 2 years and when I bought new 10/22 Collector #3 and T/CR22 to capture every 10 shot group to monitor trigger break-in and barrel rifling wear, I made a point to test fairly new ammunition (mostly less than 6 month old, no less than 2 years old ammo) and to my surprise, I experienced essentially no misfires/duds and feeding issues as long as I kept the firearms cleaned.

Since GSG 1911, 10/22 Collector #3, T/CR22 and ARs with CMMG 22LR conversion bolts prefer different ammunition, following is my latest composite of 22LR from most accurate to least accurate that you may be able to reference to save some ammunition testing - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...eeding-your-22lr-rifles.874713/#post-11635224
  • Aguila 40 gr Lead RN Pistol Match Competition Eley Prime (Boxed) - Initial testing showed promise
  • Aguila 40 gr Lead RN Eley/Aguila Prime (Boxed) - T/CR22 produced smaller groups than CCI SV shot from 10/22 Collector
  • CCI Standard Velocity 40 gr Lead RN (Boxed)
  • CCI Blazer 40 gr Lead RN (Boxed)
  • Federal Auto Match 40 gr Lead RN (Bulk pack)
  • Aguila 40 gr CPRN Eley/Aguila Prime (Boxed)
  • Winchester 36 gr CPHP 555 (Bulk pack)
  • Remington 36 gr CPHP Golden Bullet (Bulk pack)
  • Winchester 36 gr XPert (Bulk pack)
  • Remington 40 gr Lead RN Thunderbolt (Bulk pack) - While very small groups on par with CCI SV/Blazer were produced on occasion, it was not consistent
  • Federal 40 gr Lead RN Champion (Boxed)
  • Federal 38 gr CPHP Field Pack (Bulk pack)
  • Armscor 36 gr CPHP (Boxed) - While smaller groups were respectable, overall group size were not consistent but not bad for lowest priced copper plated ammo
  • Winchester 40 gr CPRN M22 (Bulk pack) - Several duds per box
  • Federal 36 gr CPHP Walmart 550 red box (new box) - Bulk pack
  • Federal 36 gr CPHP Walmart 550 red box (old box) - Bulk pack
  • Federal 36 gr CPHP Value 525 blue box (Bulk pack)
Pending testing:
  • Aguila 38 gr CPHP Aguila Prime (Boxed)
  • CCI Standard 40 gr LRN (new blue box)
  • CCI MiniMag Target 40 gr CPRN
  • ELEY Sport 40 gr LRN

  • Federal Match 40 gr LRN
  • Winchester SuperX 40 gr CPRN

Gunny, comparing your targets to mine, I find that all of MY shots looked like flyers! :) I think I'm suffering from an Adolf Hitler grip in my left hand. (yes I shoot left handed) Changing to a two handed grip on the gun improved my groups 100%.
I am fascinated by your world class ammo arsenal. How can anyone accumulate such a vast collection of STUFF?? Do you also collect spotting scopes?

I have somewhere around 70 different firearm chambered in 22lr. Finding the ammo that each gun likes the best is easier if you have a variety on hand.
But sad to say, I only had one spotting scope and I broke it.:(

Maybe the gods of spotting scopes will smile upon thee some day. Thankfully they are not too useful when shooting the 22 caliber.

My TX22 can’t handle CCI Velocitor. Constant FTEs, like the slide is cycling too quick for the cartridge to escape. I have also had huge problems with the 300 rounds of Remington Golden Bullets that I bought six months ago. Today I went to range for sole purpose of sorting out what ammo works. With the GB… 26 failures to load in 50 rounds! Couldn’t believe it. Yet when I shot 50 rounds each of Remington Cyclone, Winchester Match, Winchester Super X, Federal GameShok, and bulk Federal Range Pak…not a single failure. All from same magazine, so no variable there…The GB was horrible. It would load when I “slingshotted” the slide, but the next round would not load. Pull the mag, eject the round, reinsert the mag, slingshot the slide, fire, then…FTL. Rinse and repeat. Over and over and over…

Mine only ever had minor issues with Aguila Super Extra Hollow Points. Round nose was fine, but the hollow points would give me occasional issues more than any other. In fact mine had no issues with standard velocity and even some 900fps rated ammo cycled fine. It's had no real issues even with Thunderbolts and those you could hear almost every round sound different from how inconsistent they were loaded.

The two I have are reliable to the extreme. I've had NO malfunctions that weren't ammunition related. Golden Bullet and CCI Mini-Mags are my most reliable .22's. A note on this. All my Golden Bullet's have been bought in 100 round plastic boxes, not the "Bucket of Bullet's". I think these rounds are tossed around a lot which would damage some of the rounds.
