I recently acquired a Remington Model 31 that had no barrel. I know that, based on the serial number (54232x), it is either 16 or 20 gauge but which one is it? I would really like to have a barrel to go with the shotgun I just got.
My question is: how does one know what gauge a Mod 31 is just by the serial number?

You can disassemble the gun and look for your answer.

Removing the stock and/or trigger assembly may give you a clue. Often parts are stamped with the gauge or give Remington a call Im sure they can help.

You might be able to figure it out from the case rim impression in the bolt face finish if it has been shot much.

thanks

Fot the advice and suggestions, I will give them a try. I'm not in any hurry because, as far as I can tell, model 31 barrels are kind of scarce.

Model 31 gauge markings:

I took the advice above and called Remington, but they couldn't tell me what gauge the gun is, only that it is either 16 or 20 and it was manufactured in 1943.

So, I disassembled the gun and found that it is a 16 gauge because the bolt and the shell carrier are so marked. Unfortunately you can't see the markings until it's all apart.

That's the easy part. The hard part will be finding a suitable barrel.

Thanks to all for the help.

Thanks for the number Mr. Lapin. I found out quite easily today, that mine was made in 1937. 75 years old and still taking ducks.
