I think I have a CZ/BRNO vz24. The rifle is chambered in 8mm Mauser. Someone installed what I think is a timney trigger. The action is slick, the bore is in great shape, and the trigger is wonderfully light with no creep. In fact... I'm going to make it heavier in the interest of safety. Rifle gurus,,, confirm or deny. What is my purchase and what should I have paid for it?

The scope is going to stay off and a rear sight of some sort is going to be added. Could a knowledgeable person suggest a good sight? I am thinking peep aperture.

it started out as one but it's got commercial parts added to it now.... cocking piece, saftey, trigger, front sight...... probably more bubba'd than that.

Bolt handle's been cut and rewelded, too.

Probably a VZ-24 Czech BRNO 98 Mauser. Somebody went through most of the expensive work to sporterize it. They should've finished the job with a nice Bishop/Fajen/Boyd stock and a glass bedding job, IMHO.

The winter trigger guard is something one doesn't see too often these days, they usually get replaced when the conversion to sporting rifle happens.

The gun isn't really worth much as a military collectible anymore. Price is therefore dependant on what the buyer is willing to spend on a converted sporting arm with a military background. Without getting a close-hand look at the smithing involved, I wouldn't spend more than a couple hundred dollars. The trigger sells for around $50.00, the low-swing safety around $40. Welding the bolt handle, and drilling/tapping the receiver cost X$ in labor. Go from there. ;)

I'd have to agree with Gewehr98... I'd likely put no more than a couple hundred buck into it.

Custom mausers (unless ultra nice with a provable history of who did the work) just are worth anywhere near what it cost to build them.... and even once you put a ton of money in them they're likely not going to shoot any better than something you can buy off the rack for a fraction of the cost....

Its a postwar Brno K98. A VZ-24 will have a rib along the top of the bolt to giude the bolt through the rear ring of the receiver. The red and yellow laminated stock and the rough machining are also dead giveaways too, not to mention the stamped triggerguard.

You can buy a what is pretty much a brand new one for about $200, the one I have is a good shooter, though the trigger is so stiff, a aftermarket trigger is definately a good thing. I think the added trigger and the cost of the bending bolt would add a bit to the value as a sporter, depending if anyone wants to buy it.
