I came upon this eaten deer, I think coyotes got it. as it was a rather large deer it may have been wounded earlier in the season and was brought down or died and they found it.

It's a shame but I've come across deer like that a few times. Not far from an unlit state highway in a mostly wooded area where you see several road killed deer annually near the road. But they don't always die near the road. They are sometimes mortally wounded, bleeding internally, etc. and make it way off into the woods before dying. Once they die mother nature begins the recycling process.

We found one yesterday that was shot earlier in the season (guys came asking about it, but we didn't find it). Nothing left but a bunch of hair, the lower legs, spine and skull. Something even chewed the tips off the ribs. We have a ton of coyotes in the area but I'm still amazed how much of it they ate.

Happens to all of them sooner or later.

Wolves, Coyotes, Squirrels, Mice, Marten, Mink, Ravens, Fox, etc all eat those kills, bones and such.

Its just the way Nature works, maybe one animals does the killing, be it Human or Wolf, etc, but the rest et and benefit as well, so nothing is truly wasted.

It can be amazing how quickly a deer carcass can get "recycled". Everything Caribou mentioned above plus in my neck of the woods you can add in Turkey Vultures in summer, and crows, raccoons and possum year 'round. Bones will get carried off in every direction and can be found scattered all over the area. Mice, raccoon, and possum will also gnaw on deer antlers when they get shed which is why I never have any luck when I'm shed hunting, LOL.

I went out on the 5th for muzzleloader after my buddy shot at a doe and upon searching for blood and hair he called it a miss. I climbed in that same stand 5hrs later and for 3hrs I could hear coyotes barking, yelping, yipping in the direction she ran with the other 8 deer when he shot. I shot a buck and it dropped in the middle of the field. We gave it 40min and walked up to it to find out he was still alive and I only nicked one lung. The deer got up and took off only to jumped the river that evening and died in some really thick stuff just on the other side to where i couldn't cross the river for several days or see the deer laying there. It was found once the river lowered about 3 weeks later and the only thing left was the skull and rib cage. I went ahead and tagged him as my only buck tag because he was found.
