I bought me a .22 lr chipmunk single shot bolt action pistol with a red dot sight the other day, figured it would be a handy truck gun as well as a fun gun to hunt squirrel and rabbit with. Never really hunted with a .22 lr handgun before and am a little concerned about hollow points opening up due to lower velocity from the shorter barrel . Would I be just as well off with a solid bullet. This gun has to be my favorite gun that I don't need.

One more question It has a BSA 30mm red dot sight on it and I have no experience with red dot sights. Does it use batteries? I can't seem to find a place for any kind of battery anywhere on the sight. But something must give the red dot power right. Maybe a small watch sized battery I can't find.

I think the hollow points are more for the prevention of ricochets than expansion.

CCI is easy to find, cheap, and reliable. The only ammo I have had trouble with is Remington. It seems like there are always duds.

In no particular order:

Winchester Super-X
CCI Mini-Mags
Federal Champion
Aguila Super Extra

Thanks Magoo didn't even think of going to midwayusa to look it up. Does anybody know where that 3v battery is on the sight and how to get to it

I HATE Remington ammo!
that said, I go through tons of Golden Bullets because they cycle reliably and are cheap to shoot in my Advantage Arms .22 kit :p

I really like CCI and Aguila.
Velocitors=deep penetration, controlled expansion (no expansion from a pistol though)
Mini-Mags= great all purpose .22 round
CB Longs = quiet pest control
I have never used Stingers but lots of people really like them, I think Ill try Aguila Supermaximums if i need hypervelocity stuff though.

If i need more pop than the CB round provide but need to keep noise down Winchester super-x subsonics really pack a wallop as far as subsonic stuff goes.

I like the Federal Gold Ammo. It is accurate and has good power and reliability. Eley is also good, although it doesn't feel quite as powerful as the Federal.

For .22lr I shoot, almost exclusively, CCI Blazer 40g HV(boxed not bulk-pack). A local shop carries it for 19.99/500...This CCI is very good ammo and does everything well.

I shoot a lot of Federal Bulk and Federal AE in my Marlin 39A, Marlin bolt .22 and Winchester single shot. My Ruger 10/22 doesn't like the AE but eats up the Fed. Bulk. I just plink with mine.

red dot

deercrazy, the battery is on the inside top ,of the reostat that turns on the dot.
it takes small strong hands to move it. good luck.

I wish all the commonly available bulk packs were round nose, instead of hollow point bullets. You can find round nose bulk packs, but not as easy as going to walmart. I have to get them online.

I shoot Aguilla almost exclusively. A little higher priced than the Wally World stuff but much better all around performance in my guns.

I took my old Mossberg to the range today, sighted it in, and shot some groups with a variety of .22 ammo I had on hand. In my rifle, on 25 yard bullseye targets, the smallest group was with CCI Blazer, followed by Augilla Standard Velocity, then Federal bulk pack hollowpoints and Remington Standard Velocity. The Mossberg seems to perform best with the hotter ammo, CCI Blazer groups were half the size of the Remington Standard velocity, making one ragged hole in the 10 ring for 10 shots. If I get to shoot in an Appleseed class latter this summer, that's what I'll be taking.

You never know what ammo a .22 rifle is going to like. Nearly everyone cusses Remington Golden Bullets but I have 2 built 10/22s that prefer them over all other bulk ammo and even shoot them into smaller group than CCI and Super X. Wolf Target will beat them by a tiny amount which I don't consider worth the cost.

On a different note my Colt M4/22 shoots Winchester Super X hi-vel best and will hang with the 10/22s and their Green Mountain barrels anytime. It shoots almost as good groups with golden bullets but has a feeding problem with them once in awhile. Blasers are a lost cause. It won't feed them at all.

Can't beat Federal bulk 550 rounds at wally world. A squirrel wont know the difference in the ammo.
