What is the average range length?

I was attending a new course at one of the ranges I go to. And I over heard that they have in the works a project to expand the range out to 1000 yards. Not to mention a new pistol line and skeet lanes and bunch of other fun stuff.

If this goes through it will be a big bonus for shooters in the area to say the least.

So... I’m used to shooting out to 200 at the this range and up in the mountains I have a spot that is 660 yards.

I’m wondering what the average rifle range length is in the US.

The range that's 15min. from my place is 600 yards and opens it up to 1000 every few weeks. The range that I usually go to is 700 yards and I drive 45min. to get there.

When I shoot out to a mile or more I have to drive out to the desert and that's only 90mins. The best part about the desert is not having to put up with the range Nazi's or the village idoit that decides he just has to set up next to you.

My range provides places to shoot pistols from 5 yards to 200 yards. Rifles, from 50 yards to 300.

Wow, we have a 600 yard range here that is like 2 hours away, has a waiting list to get on and is pretty expensive. I've never been, but my boss has told me about it.

We've got 25yd, 50yd, 200yd, 500yd and a rather nice..probably 75yd deep silhouette range...and the trap range.

Best I could find was 250 yards here just an hour and change north of NYC. I'd be grateful if someone could direct me to a 600+ range in New York State!

A range located in our county has a 200 yard rifle, 25 yard pistol, and 50 yard shotgun. With all the old strip pits, ( where it was built) it is really pertty good. They have another one in the county south, and I believe they have a 600 yard, but have heard that when shooting at it, you can see cars off to the side. I would think that it could make one nervous. 1,000 would be nice, but not near enough land. We make do with what we have.

The biggest that is readily available near Atlanta is in Resaca, GA and it is 100 yards.

There is a doctor/lawyer gun club that has a 600 yard range, but it is 'spencive.

I don't know of one in Michigan that is more than 100 yards. Consider yourselves lucky. I'd love to shoot my SAR-48 at more than 100 yards.

My indoor range is 25 yards. The outdoor range I usually go to is 200 yards.

The indoor ones I've been to were a minimum of 50 feet w/ the one I regular at 25 yards.
The outdoor one I go to is 25 yards too (pistol).

Tad limited for my local range .... max is 100 yds but everything in between .... suits almost all the time tho. Need to go about 30 miles to get something longer, and then 600 is available. not too bad at all really.

The closest range to me is an indoor 25 yarder...

There is other outside ranges i go to in the 'fairer' seasons that is longer... 500 yards.

I lucked out....

i live about 20 mins from what i have found out is one of the few(less than 5), 600 yard ranges in texas that is NOT owned by the military or an individual (read this as it's owned by a club not some lucky rich guy). and there are plans to expand it to 1,000 as soon as the money is present.

the 600yard area is of course the NRA High Power section and has a pit. there are also standard "fixed target" lanes int eh riofle area from 50ft to 300yards. then another berm each for 50yrd and 100yrd next to the pistol range. pistol is the standard distance (what 25 yards??) with a covered firingline. and a new non covered area of same depth for the use of the action pistol group.

for shotgun, we have a separate range area, as in about 10 miles away, in a more open location thus giving more room to expand both areas. the shotgun range is equiped with Skeet, 5-stand, trap, and currently work is underway on the ONLY "bunker trap" (some sort of "International trap" setup i'm not much of a shotgunner) field within at least 200 miles and possibly the only one that will be acessible to the public on any regular basis in the eastern half of texas.


what do i pay to be part of all this??? $55/yr!!! i used to pay that much a year to have acess to a well kept pistol range with a simple two firing lane rifle area out to 300 yards!! with no acess to any shotgun facilites

yes there IS a campaign amoung many of the members to up the dues. trouble is there is a fear that upping the dues to a more reasonable (in light of facilites provided) will scare off the "hunter" (those who are members only to have a LEGAL sighting in spot) crowd, and also many of elder (both by age and tenure) members voice the universal cry of "but it's ALWAYS been this way!!".

OKC Gun Club (limited to 1000 members) has a 600 yard range along with several other varieties.

Indoor range I frequent (H&H) has 25 yard pistol and 35 yard rifle.

HH&A has a PPC style range for pistols from 7 to 50 yards, a fixed bench pistol range with 25 and 50 yard target holders that can accomidate 40+ shooters, and a plinking pistol range with a 20 yard berm. We have 2 seperate rifle ranges. One holding a 25 yard and 50 yard berm and the second range holding a 100 yard and a 100 meter berm. We lost the use of our 200 yard range 12 years ago due to encroaching suburbia. And now some bright individuals have chosen to create a soccer field complex directly over a low ridge downrange of our PPC range. I'm sure we'll be looking at some major safety modifications there or we'll lose that range too. Oh yeah, I almost forgot the indoor range....16 stations out to 25 yards for any pistols and .22 rimfire rifles.

I noticed your comment about the village idiot the just has to set up next to you.

I always try to explain to them that places next to me might be a bit unpleasant.

They seem to get the idea after a few side blasts and rafters shaking.

Here's my favorite .50 story,

Our group was at the range shooting, we always set up at the far end to be nice to everyone else. At the far end they also have a couple throwers for people that don't want to walk over to the shotgun range.

This group of guys are shooting some clays and one decides to sit down at a bench that one of our shooters vacated. This guy wasn't the sharpest in the bunch, apparently he decided to loosen up the plugs in his ears. My friends wife at the same time had sat down behind his .50 at the bench next to him, she fired off a round and he rolled out of the chair holding his ears!

She felt bad for him but we all had a good laugh, nothing like the village idiot loosening his ear plugs at the range.
