This could be interesting, right?

ETA, days later: I suggest that new posters in this thread read posts #48 & #57 to understand the intention that most got ... but some did not.

Wow, thats actually a hard question.

My answer will probably change, but right now Id probably say a Winchester Model 70. Simple, robust, accurate, and looks good. I dont even own one.

Too broad of a question. Best for what? I could say a Savage .22 but that'd completely suck if we're hunting Grizzlies in Alaska. I could say my BCM AR, but that'd probably not be the greatest if we're hunting squirrels in the back 40.

My HiPoint is pretty sweet. (Just kidding)

While Caribou has a good point on the Finnish 7.62x54r the best gun is OBVIOUSLY a GAU-19. Tri-barrel .50BMG firing at a selectable 1,000 or 2,000 RPM. As soon as the MG registry is reopened it's all mine. :)

And if you don't consider the GAU-19 to be a 'rifle' per se, then my vote is an AK47.

No reason to even speculate on something like that. There's no "best" anything. Every need is slightly different, and "best" is a pointless idea. A lot of what's "best" about one rifle will make it nearly "WORST" for many purposes.

Would be nice though I am not sure I could even give an answer to a much more specific question. Like the best single shot, bolt action, .22 rimfire, rifle, that I currently own?

If there was a "best" rifle, we would not have to pick it, it would be the only one we could buy.

Peter Hofer makes a museum-grade engraved wood stocked bolt gun in .338 Lapua.

That's so incredibly weird it might get the title of "best" just for pointing out how bizarre it is to try and qualify the concept of "best."

The ultimate post-modern rifle: Pillar bedded, free-floated, highly engraved blued steel, synthetic stock, steel buttplate and forecap which are case-hardened, 16-50x66mm scope, flintlock, with a laser sight, and pistol grip ... and....

Sure is "the best!"

I don't know if it's the best at anything but I'd really like to have an H&H "Royal" side-by-side rifle in something like .470 Nitro Express or maybe a .375 H&H.
