I have heard lots of rumors of it being banned, but I thought that the lawyers just told Winchester to stop making it out of liability concerns.

There are also tales of empty boxes selling for $50, and full ones for hundreds. Is that legit?

Some localities have banned Black Talon ammunition by name. San Francisco is one of those. It's anyone's guess why Winchester discontinued making it. But the current Winchester SXT is pretty much the same round, just in a different color and with a nicer sounding name.

Too many folks attribute talismanic properties to ammunition and fall for the belief that that a particular bullet (or marketing strategy) is far superior to others. Just a little bit of research shows that shot placement is far more determinative of suspect incapacitation than is bullet design. In real life, you're not going to see any measurable difference between the defensive ammunition of the major vendors.

I have a few black talons left in 40. They arent anything special but I cant shoot them just for principle. Lol. I have seen them bring rediculous prices but it was always in a lot. Not just a box or partial box.

Black Talon was a victim of it’s marketing. The anti’s seized on it’s advertising and made it sound even more deadly than it really is. As pointed out Winchester withdrew it from the market, changed the color of the bullet and reintroduced it.

Black Talon was a hard lesson for ammo makers. You won't see Winchester "super evil death ray" branded ammo. Some places have BT banned by name or places like NJ that ban all hollow point ammo. Either way as far as ballistics go, there are better choices out there.

I don't know about the empty boxes, but I once sold a full box of 44 magnum BT for an obscenely high price. So high that I'm ashamed to admit it.

What about all of this, "Zombie This And That", ammunition that Hornady was selling by the boxcar load a couple of years back? There didn't seem to be any problem with any of that. (The boxes had stupid cartoon like characters printed on them in every color of the rainbow). I never bought any on principal..... (I thought it looked, was, and is stupid). But I would think with the mental faculties the Anti's possess, they would have had a field day with it... Along with these same prosecutors who supposedly hang people for killing criminals with reloads. (Still more B.S.)

The evil nuclear-tipped Black Talon Super Death Ray ammunition has it been in production as such for over 30 years.

If you want to walk around with 30 + year old ammunition in your carry gun be my guest.

The Winchester Ranger T-Series is (accounting for product improvements) the same thing.

That said there are (IMO) better options.

I agree with the whole "better options" part. Ranger SXT is simply improved Balck Talon without the black oxide coating on the copper bullet jackets. But I've long ago convinced myself all of this, "fresh ammo is better", nonsense is just that.... Nonsense. I've proven it to myself countless times.

I have bulk 550 round Federal rimfire ammunition I purchased 30 years ago for just $8.88 @ carton at Wal-Mart. It shoots just as dependably and accurately today, as it did when I bought it. Just last Sunday I ran 25 straight at Trap with reloads I made back in 1994..... 26 years ago. Store your ammo properly, and it won't make a damn bit of difference how old it is.

I didn't say anything about ammunition that's properly stored in a climate-controlled environment. I was shooting 5.56 ammunition on army shooting ranges in the 80s that had been manufactured and put into storage during the Vietnam war. I shot artillery rounds from Korea in the 90s.

I said "If you want to WALK AROUND with 30 year old ammunition IN YOUR CARRY gun be my guest." that is a completely different scenario.

Why don't you go ahead and load up your thirty-year-old federal rimfire and carry it around on your hip in the gun for 30 years then get back to us on how well it works.

No. You said it has not been in production for over 30 years. Not about CARRYING it in the gun for those 30 years. I'm reading what you wrote. Not what you're trying to walk it back to, in order to save face. Next time, say what you mean.

Hey bud you don't tell me what I do and don't say.

It's not my fault that your reading comprehension skills are lacking.

Quite a few years ago, when I lived in Toronto, returning home from a pistol match, I shot a 9mm Black Tallon, over a chronograph, at that match. From a Glock 19. It made exactly 1000 fps. Which I thought was quite good.
Was presented with a Federal SXT in 147g, from my wife yesterday (It had come out of the washing machine) Next time I go to the range, I will shoot it. (It is really clean)
