On my ak-47 there is a little difficult to describe thingy on the barrel. a pitcure is worth a thousand words, so this crapy drawing of it ought to be worth 100 or so

thats pretty much what the end of my barrel looks like and its slightly twisted off-center when viewed in profile
 
It helps to divert gasses upwardly to help prevent the muzzle from rising for a faster follow-up shot.

How well it works and how efficient it is is anyone's guess.
 
It's a compensator, used to force the muzzle down and to the left when firing in full automatic; it was added to the AKM in the late 1950s as a way of trying to maintain practical accuracy when firing in bursts, but it doesn't really do anything in semi-auto.
