What kind of guns do the bad guys carry?

I don’t know how we got so far off topic and talking about Straw purchases, that’s not what this topic is about, or how bad guys get guns.
I don’t think anyone has a hard number on the true amount of guns that are bought through straw purchasers. If we did, I think a lot more people would be getting arrested.
I can say this. We do get a lot of new guns off the streets that are not stolen.

Doesn't the 30 to 50 rnd mags make it hard to conceal? I prefer my shield to a regular size M&P with a 15rnd mag.

depends. If they are running around in ragged out honda’s and running into stores with the intent to rob them. The stick mag would look more intimating

Sorry that I'm late on an update. Just been a little busy.

The problem with Straw Purchases is that the Fed's don't feel that it is worth there time, unless they have something else to tack on. A Straw Purchase may get a person one year. Now if they can get a store for knowingly allowing Straw Purchases, that's a big chicken dinner.

Well, unless a Cop buys a Glock for his Brother who can legally possess it for the discount. Then it's worthy of prosecution. Even when transferred through an FFL.

If I recall correctly, the buyer was a suspect in a bank robbery and when tossing his house for evidence, police found the check from his relative with Glock written in the memo, making their case. Couldn't convict for robbery, so took the booby prize. Another case of bad facts making bad law.

I don't think things have changed much at all. In the 1920's and 1930's one of the most popular long arms of the time was the Remington Model 11. From what I've read it was also the most commonly found long arm when Motorized Bandits were captured or killed.

Today the best selling high capacity 9mm Pistol and Black Rifle list at my LGS reads very similar to the list found on Bad Guys.

The thing that really surprises me is how the Shotgun seems to have fallen out of favor. Low capacity and speed of loading I guess.

Sorry about the delay on the update. The State computers were hacked and I’m still without internet at work.
I typed this on my phone with one thumb. :)

Gunny, thanks for your diligence in putting this list together. One thing I got out of it was that there isn't one single type of gun used by bad guys, it's whatever they can get their hands on..

Have a great new year, stay safe.

We've had five Homicide in the past week. One was just this morning just before 8 am. I guess you could call it job security.
That is what I have been saying for years, "human nature knows no geographic boundaries and it has not changed for thousands of years", thus good job security for those of us in LE!;) And your list show that here is no 'rhyme or reason' to the bandits preferences.

Well, the New Year is off to a great start.
I matched up two of the guns I test fired yesterday.
The Hi Point C9 that was taken off a drug dealer is matching to an Att. Murder from March.
Here is what the Hi Point looks like.
03CAB73C-3BD4-4E6E-9D72-128CDA731944.jpeg
And the Taurus PT640PRO used in a carjacking is matching to an Illegal use fo a weapon from early December.
We matched up around 300 shootings for 2019. Once we have our year end repot done, I’ll know the exact number.

I’m surprised by how many found guns you have listed. Sounds like people are just tripping on them walking down the street.

When I was a kid I used to walk the roads and pick up soda bottles to collect the deposit. Maybe I should come down there are pick up guns instead :)

If you find one it's likely crime related possibly stolen, or used and ditched, or the cops rolled up and a prohibited person tossed it so as to not get caught with it.
I would report it guns don't fall off trees but they do fall off criminals.

The thing that really surprises me is how the Shotgun seems to have fallen out of favor.

I just figured they didnt make the list because there was no rifling or anything to distinguish them from other shotguns so they werent tested. Even guage would be hard to determine from the shot. But maybe it did fall out of favor.

Maybe you could match primers, but the hulls would be far easier to find when you used it so there would likely be less evidence. I lose a ton of brass, even rifle sized brass, I dont think ive ever lost one hull. And then there is the fact that if a shotgun were used its statistically one of a couple brands so the primer indentions will be pretty close. Unlike the handguns that we see is pretty diverse.

I could be wrong but that was my reasoning. They are cheap and effective so I don't know why they would lose favor. Especially in a store or home robbery situation.

In NIBIN we only deal with semiautomatic handguns, a few rifles.
The calibers we enter are:
7.62x25
380Auto
9Mak
9mm
357 Sig
40 S&W
10 mm
45 GAP
45 Auto
223/5.56
7.62x39

Besides entering the cartridge cases from test fires, we get the cartridge cases from the crime scenes. We have to physically look at each cartridge cases and decided what will be entered into the database.
Each gun leaves it’s finger print on the cartridge cases.
I may do a topic that covers this in more detail later on.
