O.K., the obvious answer here would be if you knew for sure you were going to be involved in a fight, you would have to be a complete idiot to choose any multitool as a primary weapon.

But, if all you could carry with you due to laws was a multitool, which would you favor? The sturdy Swiss Tool? The one handed opening Leatherman Wave? Or perhaps one of the one hand opening, locking Swiss Army Knives? And why?

Either the Swiss Tool or one of the Swiss Army Lockblades. They are sturdy and have a reasonable amount of blade length. In addition, the Swiss Tool is heavy enough to function as a fist load or impact weapon.

The first mental picture I had was of someone grabbing the BG by the nose with the pliers of their multitool a la Three Stooges. :)

That said, for defensive purposes I would prefer one of the locking Swiss Army Knives. It would handle and feel most like a knife.

I am curious BruiseLee, are their specific municipal laws you are dealing with that are forbidding the carrying of folding knives? In CA, most folders, as long as they are not fully automatic, are legal for carry.

Jim March has a great article on CA knife laws here:

Best Multitool For a Fight

I guess I'm just afraid that even though the law says I can carry my Benchmade Griptillian in my pocket, the local police may not know that. This is a city and state where it's impossible to buy a Kel-Tec 3AT pistol, it's virtually impossible to get concealed carry permit, and you are fingerprinted everytime you buy a box of .22 ammo (City of L.A.).

Having said that, even here I can't see any LEOs making a big deal about a respectable looking adult possessing a SAK, unless he was wielding it in a threating manner.

The multi-tool that I'd bring to a fight is my Benchmade 805...It's not a multi-tool, you say? It is, in that it can be used for both stabbing AND slicing...Thus, it's a "multi-tool".:D.:D.

Actually, for a TRUE "multi-tool", the SOG PowerLock comes to mind, as those gears could do some damage if I didn't have time to flip it open to use the needle-nose pliers to jab with...

Dude, they fingerprint you for ammo? That is crazy! Well, it is LA! I would opt for the SwissTool, as mentioned before, it's a gret fist-load. Beyond that, in California you can carry any size folder you want. clipped to you pocket and it is NOT a concealed weapon. The knife laws in Calif. are actually more liberal than some in other states that have less handgun restrictions.
Jim March is an above reproach source for knife law info, as noted above.
Don't be intimidated! Carry whatever you want. I have carried a Lone Wolf Harsey (5" blade), Sifu (same) and currently have a Strider AR with me on most days.

Prodigal, not entirely true that you can carry any length folder anywhere in CA. Cities have local laws and I recall (Jim's link maybe) that LA has a local ordinance against anything over 3.5" (probably only if concealed). Your cities may vary.

Weird on the fingerprinting. I buy ammo from Turners in Norwalk and they just want to view my DL for a moment.

My Leatherman Supertool 200. If nothing else I could throw it and hit someone in the head. :D

OR you could tie 3 or 4 feet of paracord to it and use it as a flail. :D

The jaws don't fold, and you have a 3" linerlock in a decent steel. So it's both a knife and a serious skullcrusher.

If you suspect you're dealing with local knife ordinances, go to the office of the city attorney and demand to see a copy of the actual code. Very often it's not what you think. SF has one, but it only kicks in if you're also "illegally loitering", clearly an anti-homeless statute. In other cases, it only applies to OPEN carry - they haven't updated the local laws for the new state-law realities that big folders can be concealed. So you can end up with a situation where open carry is illegal and concealed IS.

Read...the...local...ordinance.
