What is a good powder to use in a 300 mag Weatherby. I will be using a 180 grain mjsp boat tail. I used this bullet way back when i first got the gun and it gave me the best groupings at 100 yards. I think it was aprox 80 grains of powder, but i don't know what powder was used. I am thinking maybe IMR4831, anyone know a better?

I doubt if it was IMR4831, since 80 gr is 4 gr over maximum for an 180 gr bullet. Both IMR or H4831 along with H1000 are excellent poewders for the 300 Wby, but you need to get several reloading manuals to make use of these powders and correct loading weights. A Weatherby is too nice of a rifle for a "kaboom". Please be safe.
:)

I load .300 RSAUM with Winchester 760. I really like it. I picked it because it seems to give better velocity (by published numbers) with lower pressure. I see Hodgdon has data for Win 760 in .300 Weatherby with 180 grain SPBT bullets.

I have no idea of what the original powders were as i wasn't the one doing the reloading then. I named the 4831 simply because it seemd like a powder that would work well in the 300 mag. As for the 80grain again i wasn't sure, it just seemed like it was. As you say the loads i have seen the last couple of days seem to be more in the 70 to 75 grain for the 180 bullet. That is the only part of the original loads that i am sure of was 180 jacketed soft point boat tail.
