I have a single action army revolver and don't have or locate any info on this gun, age, worth, # produced, rarity etc. My saa on the bottom of the right side is engraved liberty arms. I've heard about h.scgmidt, but don't know if he or someone else made it. The model name is liberty arms peacemaker. It had a blued finish on barrel and cylinder. The frame is color case finish w/ brass trigger gaurd and back strap. Serial # is 27xxx which in the colt data base states an 1880 mfg date which i don't believe is accurate but possible. On the left lower side of frame it has all colt proof stamps. It has a 4.75" barrel. On the left side of the barrel it says, colt single action 45. (its chambered in 45 colt). On the top of the berrel it says. Colt's pt fa co. Hartford ct usa. Ever part on this revolver is original colt. Right down to the us stamped grips. It has a hammer mounted firing pin, however, as john wayne said in true grit when he was asked why he only kept 5 rounds in his revolver instesd of 6 ha replied , because he liked his toes is exactly right. My saa also has the firing pin resting on the round, so i also carry it with anly 5 rounds. Timing, lockup, and everything on it is tight. It shoots like a dream and is deadly accurate. If anyone knows anything (information) about my saa please let me know because it's driving me mad, not knowing. Thanks

If it says "Liberty Arms", it's not a Colt, although it may have had a Colt barrel installed at some point.

Howdy

Does it look like this:

If so, sorry to bust your bubble, but that is not a Colt. Colt never put brass trigger guards or backstraps on the Single Action Army. Cap & Ball revolvers, yes, but never on the SAA. Always iron or steel.

Liberty Arms imported SAA replicas made by Herbert Schmidt in Germany in the 1960s. I suspect that may be what you have.

Regarding the markings on the lower left side of the frame, those are not proof marks. This is a photo of the lower left side of a 2nd Gen Colt. The dates are patent dates. The Rampant Colt is a registered trademark of Colt. Some companies have gotten in a lot of trouble for stamping a Rampant Colt on their guns. The actual proof mark is the little tiny upside down triangle on the front of the trigger guard. Inside the triangle are the letters VP. This stands for Verified Proof. Colt has been marking the trigger guard of the SAA with that mark since 1901, to show the gun has been proofed for Smokeless Powder.

Here is the same area of the frame of a Cimarron Cattleman, actually made by Uberti. Lots of companies stamp the patent dates on their frames, there is no law against that.

About the barrel, hard to say. Here is a photo of the markings on the barrel of another 2nd Gen Colt. Does your barrel look like this? For a while Cimarron was stamping their barrels almost exactly like this, except they purposely misspelled some things, to avoid trademark infringement with Colt. I dunno if they are still doing that.

Sometimes you can learn something from an imported SAA replica by looking at the Serial Number. Most of them have the SN stamped on the underside of the frame, just in front of the trigger guard, just like a real Colt. Here is a photo of the SN on the same Uberti Cattleman pictured in the other photo. The BP in the square is actually a date stamp, it does not mean Black Powder. The BP means the gun was proofed at an official Italian government proof house in 2001. Yes, I obliterated the last two digits of the SN. If you look closely, you can see that this SN was laser engraved, because of the little dots the characters are made up from. The star is the actual proof mark on this revolver, indicating it was proofed at the Gardone proof house.

Take the cylinder out and look at the rear surface. Colt usually stamped a Rampant Colt on the rear of the cylinder, like this:
