I have saved my pennies and now the moment of truth has come. I am ready to stimulate the economy but I am hesitating to pull the trigger. I have several guns and each has been “honest this is the last one honey.” Well this near future purchase is truly the last purchase for a while and I only have so much money.
I wanted to buy an “assault rifle” before the Dems sweep into power and enact an AWB. I am not sure which one I want or even if this is a good reason to buy one (range access is limited). I do have my CCW and ready access to a pistol range, but do not own a 1911. Blasphemy, I know. All opinions welcome.

first idea: read the 160 page thread on what other people have bought with their stimulus money
second idea: read all the threads about the AWB that may or may never happen

third idea: think of the gun or related accessory you have always wanted but never could afford. buy it. you will be happy :D

Lots of pistol ranges allow .22 rifles. If that's the case at your range consider an AR-15 with a .22LR upper.

You NEED all of the above but if you can only pick one option Id go with the SKS and the 1911.
These are essential to any gun collection.

Buy a bunch of AR lowers and slowly build them up to complete rifles. The lowers are a good way to prepare for a possible ban.

I say the AR. With different upper choices it is a very versitile weapon. From defense to varmint hunting to precision shooting. DPMS is a very fine choice!

Precisely. If .223 gets so expensive that the ammo manufacturers price the 2nd amendment out of existance, then you can switch to, say, .22LR, 7.62x39, or whatnot, and none of those uppers counts as a weapon---which will help appease SO.

SKS' and 1911s aren't going anywhere anytime soon. They'll be there.

It depends a bit on what kind of shooting you do.

If it was me, i'd go with the AK for realtively cheap plinking and killing of milk jugs and old computers and a rifle for accuracy and distance shooting.

As you can see, i'm more into rifles than handguns. Still, an SKS and 1911 is awfully tempting...

So, we have 1K to spend?
Yes, about 1k to spend. I do mostly pistol shooting because my range allows no centerfire rifles. To use a rifle I would have to go to a public range 1 hr way. I have no real need as I have other weapons for SD, I just dont have a ar/ak and I think a ban is on the horizon sooner than later. I could take the non selfish route and buy my wife a pistol she is more comfortable with. If I were a rich man...

I made a similar choice for similar reasons and went with the AK.

I chose a Yugo M70 underfolder and am very happy with it.

If I had unlimited money I probably would have gone with an AR instead but the AK seemed to offer more bang for the buck (pun intended).

i would normally say an ar and they are my 1st choice, however with price of ammo i would reccomend the ak. this will allow you to shoot more, and get more bang for your buck. i say get the ak, lots of mags and lots of ammo and then go to a training course, where they can train you to run the ak like a sewing machine.
