What was the first gun you ever bought for yourself?

During college I picked up a Marlin 22 mag. When I graduated my first pistol was a Colt Huntsman .22.
The Marlin was not accurate so I traded it for a Weaver 2X7 Rifle scope.

In 1974 I purchased a Marlin lever gun. A model 336 in .35 rem. Still have it and have taken many deer with it.
I bought myself one of those around the same time. Carried it on my hikes through the woods on my farm and neighboring farms for many years. Finally gave it to my brother in law who kept bugging me for it. He was also my hunting partner. That was back when you could carry a gun just about anywhere and people wouldn't freak out.

The first "gun" I ever bought was a percussion Hawken kit gun when I was around 18-19. Put it together in the basement and used to shoot with a local BP club that had its own range out on a member's farm. I had lots of fun with that gun, but ended up selling it a few years later to pay for college expenses. I still miss it!

The first modern firearm I ever bought was a new Glock 17 Gen2. I did a lot of target shooting on the local range, and used it as my home defense gun for years. I've still got it and its till going strong.

First gun I actually bought myself was a Star PD in 45 acp.

Wish I still had that gun.

A used DPMS from Cabelas a few months after I turned 18. It was a pretty fun gun, but there were guns I wanted more so I sold it to a friend.

Next AR I get will be built by me so I don't have the same frustrations as with this one.

I was 20 or 21 in 1987 when I bought my first gun. A Bluesky import Garand, still got it to. You can buy a rifle at 18 years old in my state but was too broke from 18 to 19 years old to do so lol. Second gun was a Colt series 80 1911A1, still got that also.

A High Standard Sentinel Deluxe 9 shot .22LR revolver. I bought it used, with a holster, on my 21st birthday in 1972. As I recall I paid $35.

It killed a lot of rats at the township dump.

Had to smile as that was my first handgun purchase too, Still got it and its still in great condition! The nickel finish is still 98% Wow I think I paid less than $65 new. Oh boy that was the start and shooting is so addictive, I shoot larger calibers mostly now, but will occasionally get the .22s out to teach a new shooter..

When I was 13 I typed a permission letter to buy a gun.
Took a streetcar 9 miles to a gun shop & purchased a Savage model 22410. My brother lost it in the woods while he was with "OLD GRAND DAD" I got so mad he gave me his new Marlin 39A---I love that rifle.

In 1985 I bought a Winchester 1894 in .30-30 right after I turned 18 from Seagle’s Guns in Oakland, Ca. I always wanted a gun like my Grandfather had in the cabinet on the ranch. I had to sell this gun a few years later to pay the rent after I lost my job, but to this day still have 4 1894’s in the safe...

Second gun I bought shortly after was a Browning A-bolt in .338 Win Mag. I wanted an elk gun like my Dads .300 Weatherby... for the elk hunt we always wanted to do together. This gun, too was sold so I could stay dry in the Humboldt rain... and (regrettably) we never did get to go on an elk hunt either. Ironically Dad gave me the Weatherby about two years ago... and I still haven’t shot it yet.

Times and circumstances certainly do change, and I am doing a hell of a lot better than I ever thought I would do (I haven’t had to sell anything to eat since my college days), but the constant has always been my love for firearms and shooting has never waned.

Stay safe!

My first gun was a third-hand J.P. Sauer & Sohn .22 LR western SA revolver that I bought when I was 17.
Carried it home on a city bus wrapped in a brown paper bag.
Used it to learn indoor bullseye target shooting at an indoor range in the basement of a local high school.
I have owned many guns since then, but it was the beginning of a lifelong hobby.

I don't remember the first one. It was either a Rohm RG66 for $20 or a Marlin 22 that cost me a hard earned $27. I think that I was 15 at the time. My first centerfire was a 6.5 Carcano that was possibly the worst rifle that I have ever had my hands on. I 16 when I got that one.

My first was a Remington Model 788 in 6mm Remington which I purchased in 1973 after I started making "real" money my senior year of high school. I bought it from a my hometown (pop 400~) hardware store operated by the local plumber for about $125 and he recorded the sale in a spiral notebook as required by law at that time. Many years later after he had retired and closed the store he told me that he had burned the book after keeping it for some time without anyone ever coming to see it. He is long gone now but I will always remember him as he taught me a lot about plumbing, business, and human nature.

Riomouse, did you ever shop at Hogans over in Pleasant Hill?

Riomouse, did you ever shop at Hogans over in Pleasant Hill?

I shopped at Seagles, The Traders down in San Leandro and the tiny little gun shop up on College Ave. in (believe it or not) Berkeley. That place had the first Ruger No.1 Tropical I ever saw in .458 Win. ( I lusted after that gun for a while, never had the money to buy it!) I didn’t have a car at 18 so I never made it through the Caldecott tunnel to shop in Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, etc.

Wait, I take that back...I bought a Crossman .357 .177 pellet gun and CO2 cartridges at Best Products in Concord...I smuggled that home on BART (if that counts!) :)

Stay safe!

When I traveled out from Texas to meet what would be future inlaws in the early 90's I walked into Hogan's on Contra Costa Blvd. and was shocked to see a pretty good display of firearms in such an anti state, Sadly I think they closed around 2005. .... And yes I'm shocked to think there could have been a gun store in a town with nuclear free zone signs at the city limits! The only reason I go to Berkeley now is to ride the beautiful little steam trains in Tilden park.

You sure he wasn't hunting "WILD TURKEY" :)... enough of either one will certainly do you in! :barf:

870 Wingmaster 12 gauge . 1972.
Interesting, my first gun was the same but I was given it because it "Didn't work no more". One firing pin and spring (old one was thoroughly wound around the trigger mech) later and it worked fine. Cost me $1.50 back then. I think it was right about the same time frame as your purchase.
