What would be the most obnoxious firearm to shoot at a range?

No question for me... AMAC

with the original Iver Johnson Brake.

Absolutely BRUTAL to bystanders!

And poorly positioned spotters too.

From personal experience?

Outdoors -- .338 Lapua with a muzzle brake. I've shot an M60 which was a pussycat compared to that. I mean, that thing was sweeping dust, leaves and brass off the cement three ports away.

Indoors -- a "customized" 2.5" .44 Magnum revolver, may have been Magnaported. I don't mind loud noises, but that thing was rattling my molars.

I would think that at an indoor range it would be a black powder revolver.

OK, I wasn't shooting a revolver, but I did take a single shot BP pistol into an indoor range. I thought they might refuse me, but surprisingly they said OK. Since I wasn't shooting in a hurry, and since they had large exhaust fans in that range, it didn't produce any more overall smoke in the room than if somebody was smoking tobacco.

However, I agree with the idea that a BP revolver, or multiple people with single shot BP, would be an issue.

When I first bought my .38 Special Colt 1911 - the first opportunity which I had to shoot it was indoors and I had a couple of boxes of very old wadcutter re-loads from a long-dead fella I knew.

It was incredibly awful after only 3 mags or 15 rounds. We all had to leave, the air system simply wasn't up to it.

What would be the most obnoxious firearm to shoot or have shot near me at a range?

The only thing I will shoot without ear protection is .22 CB in a rifle. .22 CB in a pistol barks enough to deserve ear protection.

What I have found unbearable with ear protection on:

.500 Magnum revolver. Belonged to a friend of my son: I handed it back after three shots with POI very close to POA because I knew on shot #4 I was gonna flinch embarassingly and totally miss.

.50 BMG bolt action fired by someone else, with me four or five stations down. I have fired a .50 Barrett semi-auto: behind the gun is fun. Beside a .50, not so fun. The daughter of the guy with the .50 bolt action would run down off the range to the parking area when he prepared to fire. I felt like joining her.

My son acquired a .223/5.56 AR with a short barrel with muzzle brake included in the 16.5" OABL. He has .223/5.56 ARs that he loves. He hated this one. No fun to shoot even with plugs and muffs. A 16.5 plain barrel .223/5.56 AR is less painful FCOL. The muzzle brake throws all that distinctive whiplash .223 crack back at you. He traded it off.

.500 Magnum revolver
.50 BMG (unless I am behind it)
.223/5.56 with a muzzle brake.

For me, it was the feller sitting next to me at the shooting bench with his UltraMagnum Eargeschplitten LoudenBoomer with the BOSS on the business end. Hurt the heck out of my ears, though I was wearing foam plugs and my mouse ears.
Of course HE likely would say it was my beloved CETME with the Century Patented Muzzle Blast Enhancer, when I answered him with a rapid fired 20-round magazine...... He packed up and left. I went back to my slow and steady shooting for groups. Yes, I can be a bit of an ****** at times.

Last time I was out at the range a couple of people complained about my 7mm rem mag. told them to wear ear protection and kept shooting.

7mm Rem Mag?

.500 Mag revolver, .50 BMG and .223/5.56 with muzzlebrake made my sons' 7mm Rem Mags (Browning and Savage bolts) seem sweet and benign whispery.

Of course, I use plugs and "mouse ear" muffs at the range, and one or the other shooting outdoors on the mountain.

I find people that breeze in, set up next to me on my left, and shoot .308 AR riflles in rapid fire a bit more than obnoxious.
There sets an open bench down to my right but empty cases are flying at me without any regard.
Some people are obnoxious, haven't found a gun I can't put up with yet.

I once gave someone else the loudest thing they'll ever hear...if they can still hear.

Went to an indoor range that had a separate, closed off 2 lane section for rifles with two friends. There were already 2 in the other lane shooting when we came in.

I setup a K31 which is similar round and barrel length to an m44 mosin carbine. Everyone was behind me talking when I finished.

Touched a round off and everyone behind started yelling stop, stop, stop. It was the first time I shot the gun, so I thought the receiver blew. Everything looked OK so I turned around expecting someone to have been by a ricochet.

Turns out a guy in the other lane felt his phone vibrate, took off his ear muffs and answered the phone. Forgot I was going to start shooting, and I couldn't tell someone answered the phone because everyone was talking anyway.

I apologized, he said it was his fault, and they left as quick as they could.

.338 Lapua with a muzzle brake.

This one, especially in a block house w/ a roof on it. Doubling up on hearing protection isn't enough. I'm not a fan of the 500 S&W either. You can feel the muzzle blast a few stations over. There is a time and place for everything. If the range is packed I won't shoot anything w/ a brake out of respect for others.

Worst I ever experienced was at an indoor range, next to a guy shooting a 4" 500 S&W mag, with muzzle brake. I,ve heard loud before, but that was flat out unreal, even with earplugs and muffs. Painful, excruciating, unbearable. Had to leave the range area until he left.

Minneapolis Magnum Lone Eagle pistol chambered in .30 '06 with a muzzle brake is by far my most obnoxious gun to shoot. I have never shot it indoors nor would I want too.
I also have one chambered in .223. It also barks but is much more tolerable.
Next would be the 7mm RUM. I don't have a brake on it but it needs one. Its a toss up though between saving the shoulder a bit with the break or the hearing and the debris kicked up when shooting prone.

At an outdoor range a 9 mm semi pistol used by an idiot to my left. I'm seated trying to shoot a rife and the idiot rapid fires his pistol showering me repeatedly with hot brass.

My friend and I shot his .460 revolver at an indoor range. It was LOUD! We only shot a couple of cylinder fulls as we didn't want to be too obnoxious.

Another friend and I shot his Mosin Nagant at an indoor range. That had people stopping and looking over to see what the noise was.

I have a M92 AK pistol that has a good bit of noise and fireball to it. I put on a four-piece cone flash hider on it and that does a pretty good job of moving the noise and concussion downrange.

Besides something obvious like a .50 BMG...any rifle with a nasty muzzle brake.

If you want to be a jerk just because you can, get the hottest round in the shortest barrel with a muzzle brake.

What was he supposed to do?

If I'm crowded at the range I get the M44 out and touch of a few rounds. Suddenly I have plenty of room. New club member comes up to the line and without requesting cold range flips on the lights to impress girl friend I guess. I was ready to shoot my M1 but stopped when the lights went on. As soon as he turned the lights off and before he had ear protection on I fired as he was right behind me. I'll bet he doesn't do that again.

A new contender for "if you want to be a jerk" appears
