Hi all,

If you had your choice between a brand new FN Hi-Power, 9mm, polished blued, with the SFS system for $399 or a used (excellent condition) S&W 5946, 9mm, stainless with night sights for $279... which would you choose and why? I'm looking to purchase my first semi-auto pistol. Thanks for your input!

Chris

FN Hi-Power would seem to be a better starter pistol in my humble opinion. That's a decent price on the FN too, IIRC. What are the conditions of each gun?

I prefer the DA of the Smith and the mags would also fit my P11 in a back up role, so no brainer, I'd go with the Smith. The Hi Power is a classic and I wouldn't mind having one in the collection, though. It'd probably just be a safe queen, but nothing wrong with that, either.

If you can afford it, buy both. The prices quoted are very good and both are excellent guns. I have a Browing Hi-Power and a S&W 6906. Would not part with either. I don't own the 5946 but all third generation S&W's have excellent reputations.
If it comes to choosing one, I would get the Browning.

Good luck.

I'd buy the Highpower. If it would be my first gun I'd like it to be a "virgin", or brand new one. But that's my humble opinion. Get what you'd be most comfortable with.
