Whats a good price to pay for a brand new S&W M&P 9mm, 40, or .45?

Reason I ask is because I've finally, after MUCH research, chose what will be my first gun. I plan on getting an S&W M&P 9mm or .45. Haven't decided the caliber yet but I am heavily leaning towards the 9mm since the ammo is cheaper, plus, I want a Kimber Pro Carry II as my second gun and that's in .45.

I went into a local gun shop yesterday and asked how much the Smith & Wesson M&P's are and he told me $699 brand new. Being that I did some research on the gun, I had the idea it would run around $500 brand new.

My question is, is $699 a good price? Is that too high? What would be a good price on a brand new one?

I don't know what a good price is since I've never shopped around for one, but the generally-cheaper of my two local shops has them for $555 or $580 for 9 or 45 respectively.

The more expensive shop (that I try to avoid, but sometimes can't since they have a bigger selection) has them for $630 and $695.

If I were looking to buy one today and only found it for $695, it would come down to "How bad do I want this?"
If I was really itching for it, then i'd swallow the cost and not look back. Done that a few times.

Please forgive my ignorance on this but is it legal to purchase a handgun in a different state than the one I have my permit in (NJ)? Like, if I find the gun cheaper in PA or MD, can I purchase it there and bring it back to NJ?

Downr@nge, they won't let you out the door once you flash that Jersey ID. A handgun can be shipped to a licensed dealer who holds an FFL (Federal Firearms License) when purchased out of state. You'll have to OK that with the dealer before hand and negotiate a price. Perhaps showing him someone else's price might incline him to lower the price to something reasonable rather than the $31 off full retail being offered.

My first M&P was on sale for $550 but I had a discount coupon (Cabelas) for $75 off making it a good deal. There was also a $50 mail-in rebate (and there still is).

My second was a used but like new 9mm compact. I paid $425, a bit much but I wanted one for the wife to try out.

The third was a 9L which runs a bit more than the standard M&P. I paid $530 for that one through a local gun shop I frequent.

The 40/357/9 M&Ps in Full Size and Compact all tend to run the same size, the Long, Pro and Pro Series will all be more as will the .45ACP.

If your local dealer is willing to do a transfer, it will generally cost you an additional $35 plus what he charges. I would push for a better deal or perhaps take a drive to a smaller town in-state.

One note about the M&Ps and ammo cost, the 40 S&W isn't much more to shoot than 9mm and provides much more flexibility as several barrels are available to change calibers. You can buy a 357Sig barrel that will work with your 40cal. for about $80. You can also buy a 9mm conversion barrel for about $150 that will drop in and needs only a new 9mm magazine for proper function. If you buy a 9mm anything, you will have to purchase an entire slide assembly AND magazines to shoot 40/357. The 45 is not interchangable with its smaller siblings.

Over 600 bucks is way too much. I paid $580 for mine years ago and I've seen so many a lot cheaper than that. You can order the firearm cheaper from out of state and have it shipped to an FFL. Better yet, move out of NJ to a gun friendlier state!

Socal and San Antonio Texas, a good price for a NEW M&P of any size/caliber is about
$525-$550....

Honestly though, i love buying Used guns. Most of these guns for sale are hardly touched or have seen maybe 500rds. 99% of people can't damage a gun like this in such a short period of time.

I paid $375 for a full size, night sight .357 sig. then a factory .40 cal barrel for $40. that is a direct drop in with nothing else required to turn it into a true .40.

I paid $400 for a Compact M&P .40 (used), and I paid $425 for a compact M&P 9mm.

the used markets can offer up such good deals that i have a hard time buying new

I got my full size M&P40 new in box for $469, less then a year ago at a local shop. It was not on sale.
