I'm going to be rooming with a buddy who has about 5K (mostly greek) milsurp 30.06 rounds which I am free to help myself (he only has one garand to feed).

But I don't have a 30.06, and I don't have a wad of cash sitting around. My budget is about $600 and all the guns I've been able to get my greasy little paws on are too light to plink 30.06 with (rem 770, 700 sps, TC Encore, various Savage creations, etc.) Especially for a guy whose only 5'6" and 170 pounds.

Is there such thing as gun that is both heavy and inexpensive, or do I need to save up untill I can afford a wooden stock?

A CMP Garand is the perfect solution. Heavier rifles, and the semiauto action absorbs some recoil too. And the cost is about $400.

Garand or Springfield, since they're out of Garands.

Though, one of those "pressure testing barrelled actions" would work. It's like a 10 pound barrel with a bolt attached. Hey, it's heavy :p

yes, the h/r or nef models will come witha heavy bbl. Also , check out savage , look through their big catalog, and get one, varminter style, with a heavy 26 inch bbl, and laminate stock. Or call them directly , and see if they wont put one together for you. Either of these should do the trick. Then of course, their is allways the Garand...
