Obviously if money wasn't an option, then you could get a Barret semi-auto .50bmg, NFA stuff like M-60s, etc. Heck, there's even a company making a semi-auto in .505 Gibbs of all things.

I don't really have the money to buy anything cool or powerful that I'd like, but I've always been interested in hi-cap assault weapons, especially ones that shoot big bullets.

I know where there's a few egyptian Hakims within my price range, and while they're an unusual design, extremely big and heavy, and fire a non-mainstream caliber, I'm still thinking about getting it because of the weirdness factor, and the fact that I can get 25 rd. mags for it.

I imagine that 25 rounds of 8mm should put the Hakim fairly close to the top of the heap for most powerful "assault rifles" under $2k. Here's some others that I think deserve mention:

-alexander arms .50 beowulf. can be used with drums that will hold 34 rds. of ammo

-M1A. 100 rd beta mags of .308 available, although I believe a fully loaded .308 beta mag weighs in at 10lbs, which would put the whole package at 20lbs! Hardly practical for anything unless you're Arnold, but cool nonetheless

-DPMS in .338 Federal. has 19 rd. mags available

-SVT40. powerful, but I don't think there's any hi-cap mags for them

-Saiga 12. It's not a rifle, but a SA 12ga with 10 rd mags and 20 rd. drums would surely mess up someone's day

-Cobb? .30-06. Don't know much about it, but I believe it's an AR variant or something that takes 20 rd mags. I also think they're getting pretty close to the max. price threshold.

I know that browning makes a BAR in .338 and .300WM. Does anyone make reliable hi-cap mags for these guns in those calibers? If not, someone should. They should also make aftermarket stocks with pistol grips and bayonet lugs too. After all, all good guns have bayonet lugs on them.

That's all the top contenders I can think of right now. What other powerful guns are there under $2k that are semi-auto, and hold at least 10 rounds or more?

Also, out of the guns I've already mentioned, what's the most powerful? Obviously an M1A with a beta mag would be the most firepower, but which caliber listed is actually the most lethal? I think the .338 federal actually has more ft. lbs. of energy than a .50 beowulf, but from what I understand, a heavier bullet is still more deadly than a lighter bullet at a higher velocity. What about the 12ga? With slugs and at closer ranges, wouldn't even a 2 3/4" slug be more effective than any of the rifle calibers listed so far?

What exactly are you doing with this "firepower"?

The most firepower for hunting gophers would be a good 10/22 converted to 17HMR.

The most firepower for hunting elephants could be a nice .458 Lott or even your .505 Gibbs.

The most firepower for flying creatures might be a good cut down Saiga-12 with 20 round drum.

The most firepower for two-legged vermine might be a good AR or AK.

....

:)

AES-10, RPD clone, etc. with a drum mag. If you wanna get illegally fancy, you can add a shoelace. By about four of those setups and you're all set.

I don't plan on hunting anything actually, except the occasional water jug or defiant jack rabbit.

I can barely afford to feed the guns I already have, including the cheap ones (AK, mosins, 12ga, .22).

In two years, I think I've only put 8 rds. through my .30-06.

I'm just interested in what the most powerful, affordable gun is. I realize that it's an "odd" question to ask, but I don't think it's come up before.

Also, big powerful guns that hold tons of ammo that also have bayonets move even higher on the list. Gotta love a gun with a knife on it.

when saiga comes out with it's 762.54 , that should do it. i don't know if there is a 338 winmag, or Lapua , with a hicap, but i would deff wait on the saiga, they are supposed to be coming out very soon.

semi-auto Browning M1919. Belt-fed .30-06 or .308 is nothing to sneeze at. In place of a bayonet, just get a Mosin Nagant M44 (they are still really cheap) and lay it beside the M1919.

Most "firepower" under 2k? How about 570 gallons of gasoline and some matches? You wanna talk "firepower"......

I would rather have one of these...

Old dictum: "One hit is firepower; a hundred misses are just noise."

Caliber,etc. are basically irrelevant.

You could buy 28 Mosin Nagant 91/30's and arm an infantry platoon.

Russians tried that. Germans countered with one MG 42. Worked pretty well. Russians had more than 28 guys though and considered them disposable.

For under $2K I would have to agree with Beetle. With a 1919A4 or A6 you are not limited to fixed capacity mags, because it is belt-fed you can shoot as much as you can afford to link.

Hakim.....

Don't forget the .458 winmag Garand conversion and the Rem 7400/750 with 10 round mags in .35 Whelen, and if you could import it, the Saigas in .30-06 and I think also 9.3x62 (or 9.3x74mm).

I bet you could get a few RPGs from Somali pirates for less than $2K. They recently came into a good inventory.

I beg to differ. My son and I love using a couple of ak's for shooting gophers. If we think it is going to be a rough day, we bring his friend along with an added sks.
