What's wrong with the Ruger 10/22?

The new ones with the composite parts are fine too. I just bought one at Wally's a month ago, and I've got 1500 rounds through it. It's the third 10/22 I've owned over a thirty year period, and they all did the same thing...they shot anything I put in them and did it reliably and quite accurately and predictably. What's not to like for a couple of hundred bucks?

I can't really understand the accuracy issues, my old one put many muskrats in the bag as I ran my trapline as a kid. Sometimes I would shoot as many as I caught in traps. Squirrels and rabbits feel as easily.

The accuracy isn't an issue as far as hunting goes, it shows up on the target range. I guess it all depends what you bought the rifle for.

First let me say that I think everybody should own a 10/22.................but to be fair the Marlin model sixty is more accurate out of the box and costs less.

Let me anticipate the responses.

You can make a 10/22 really accurate.

I know but then the cost goes up to where you could have bought a more accurate rifle in the first place.

But I really enjoy building a custom rifle, I feel that I've personalized it into something unique.

Again, as far as cost you could have bought a really nice accurate rifle in the first place. As to tinkering with a rifle, I like to get an old M1 from the CMP and spend time restoring it.

i bought one used and shot it a few times. when I got home one day I took off the barrel completely and noticed I couldn't see out the end. after some work I got the obstruction out and it looked like chunks of rifleing. Won't buy another one

Buying a used firearm is always a risk. Maybe buying new from now on would be better.

The only thing I hated was the stupid bolt release that is down by the trigger. Although I understand that for 8 bucks and 20 minutes of time you can swap that out for one that actually works. Just frustrated me that it's been a pain in the butt for years, and they never really cared to change it. Although maybe they have since I bought mine. It was OK, but I ended up trading it for a Ruger 597 VTR, which has one bad feed about every 100 rounds. Not sure which was better, the 10/22 had a feed issue once in a while too. But hey, you can shoot all day for 20 bucks, and still have rounds left over. Pays for itself pretty quick if you like to shoot a lot.

I've had a 10/22 since I was a kid and have put tens of thousands of rounds through it. I think I' ve actually wore out a couple of springs as it's gotten a bit finicky in the ignition department. It's the Deluxe. It's always hit what I've aimed at when I've done my job, including shooting stray bits of brass laying about out to 50 yards and shotgun shells beyond that. I've put many rounds through this rifle and I know where it shoots. I also have a 10/22 for my son. Both have been reliable (well except for the ignition in mine the last couple of years) and accurate.

I did have an issue with one of my original magazines, but that's because I cleaned it once with the wrong chemicals and ate the plastic. One day it finally gave up the ghost.

I have never used anything other than the stock magazines. My cousin did and they became unreliable after a time. They also ruin the good looking lines of the rifle. All in all, since my dad got the first one in the mail back in the sixties, our family has had a dozen or more of these little rifles. No one has had any complaints. Of course, the newest one is probably over ten years old and none with a polymer trigger housing

What is wrong with the 10/22? Seems like a strange question...

Perhaps.................but this thread has brought up some issues. What are you trying to say?

Now this complaint I understand. That thing used to drive me crazy until I figured out it's a rocker arm, not a push/push gizmo. You push on one end to lock the bolt, the other end to release it. Once I figured that out, it was no more trouble.

But I was using some colorful words at first.

It took me a while to realize that too... I locked the bolt open and could not release it! I thought Oh crap, I bought a broken gun!

Well, I figured if I said I wanted to buy a 10/22, all I would have gotten in response was "so what?"

I see.......................but I think you would have gotten several posts advising you not to.

More than likely what you saw was the result of a seriously leaded barrel.

Had one years ago - a 60s vintage - and loved it. Just picked up another brand new one and love it.

Accuracy is fine for the hunting and plinking I do. I leave them stock and no problems with reliability. No issues with either. When I want accuracy, there are other .22s I shoot -- CMP Kimber, old Mossberg to scratch that itch.

Got some expensive shotguns with polymer trigger housings - no big deal and IMO, makes things smoother. Don't care for the plastic barrel band on the new one. Maybe I'll replace it. But no big deal. Don't care for the black wrinkle finish either, but that's just me and if it holds up better, I'll be liking it just fine.

All-in-all IMO, one heck of a little gun for the money!

Never owned a Model 60, but seem to be good as well and wouldn't hesitate were I in the market for another inexpensive plinker.

With winter coming on, this could be your chance to rescue one from a pawnshop and clean it up over the winter. I can get them for around $60.00 out the door in this area. (after negotiating)
