Well, its been a good day for me. Like the title tells it all, I went into my LGS to finish paying off on my 1891 Argentine Mauser that I had on lay-a-way. While waiting my turn at the counter, I happen to see this little Ithaca 49 lever-single shot 22. rifle. I had fond memories of shooting my brother in law's same rifle, so I had a look. It was in pretty good condition, and the price, well...it had to come home with me. $99 bucks is the cheapest I have ever seen them go! So, long story short, I came home with my new to me 1891 Argentine Mauser and Ithaca 49. Can't wait for the weekend! (Sorry for the poor pictures, will do better next time around.) picture 1.jpg picture 2.jpg

I have looked at those little Ithaca’s a few times and I have decided to buy one. Now that I have made that decision, I don’t see them anymore.
I have known the feeling. Every gun show I went to these were around $175 or so. It was a good day today. :)

If the Ithaca is single-shot, what does the lower tube do?
The lower tube is fake, just more for appearance then function. When you swing the lever, all it does is eject the spent round and lower the block for another single round to go in. Its like a Martini-Henry action, just looking like a western lever action.

Nice find.

I have the Stevens version of the Ithaca, bought in 1988, I think. It's the Model 89. Neat little gun, also with the fake magazine tube, essentially a "cowboy'd" Stevens Favorite.

Earlier this year, I went in just to use the range and ended up walking out with two guns (Star Super B and Winchester M94.) Didn't get to shoot as the BGC took all my range time.

I also added a gun to the purchase once while starting a BGC on another one (Ruger NM Single Six to CZ70.)

Very nice! My first rifle was the Ted Williams version of the Ithaca 49, only without the under tube. Grandpa gave it to me for Christmas when I was 10. I still have it. Don't shoot it much anymore, just cuz. Lots of fond memories with that gun. It'll be part of my estate one day.

You got a great deal. Someday I;ll pick one up if priced right but most I've seen are pretty beat. There was a 49R that actually was a repeater. Only lasted a couple years because they were nothing but problems. Ithaca bought them back. Then they rebranded the Erma lever action as Ithaca. The Henry is pretty much the same as the Erma.

Well, I took it out today and wow, it was awesome! I don't think it was shot much, ejected every time. The only problem I had was three rounds didn't go off, and I think it has to do with the firing pin striking too far to the edge of the rim. But, who knows, maybe that will work its way out over time. Shooting CB's and the quiet 22's are a blast!
