Where can I check my handgun's record?

Does anybody here know where I should contact if I want to check my handgun‘s record? My local police department?
I bought a handgun from a gun show and I want to make sure it is not a stolen gun.I know the dealer maybe had checked it before he sold it to me, but after reading several messages in this board, I am going to check it by myself.

If purchased from FFL pro'bly "no sweat", though it has been known to happen...
otherwise contact local PD.
