I am looking to start collecting Enfields. WWI, WWII, Korean. I might want some Ishapore 308s. Can you post websites and/or dealers?

Right now Centerfire Systems (www.centerfiresystems.com) and AIM Surplus (www.aimsurplus.com) have a hodge-podge of Enfields for sale. Condition and collectibility are questionable on this lot.

Souther Ohio Gun (aka SOG, www.southernohiogun.com) also has some wire-wrap No1's.

If you are looking for specific collectible pieces, you should probably look at Brian Dick's website, www.bdlltd.com for these. His prices are not the cheapest, but he is considered by many to be one of the best Enfield dealers out there.

Auction sites occasionally have a deal or two, but most of the Enfields you find there are overpriced and of dubious quality....

Hope this helps!!

BTW, to find out more about them in general, you can try this website:

...but you just might get lucky. I paid $150 for a #4 Mk1/3 from some guy on AuctionArms. The rifle appeared to have not been fired since getting a FTR in 1954, including a new barrel.

On those wire wrapped jobbies...

Are they shootable? I heard that they had bad barrels... Reckon the actions are good enough to warrant getting a new barrel?

Anyone out there have any experience with them?

MuzzleBlast, true, you can get lucky, but you have to have patience and know what you are looking at.

Skofnung, I think it is a toss of the dice what you get with those....

I found my #1 Mk3 at a gunshow and my #4 Mk1 at a gunshop. I commonly see Enfields at Pawn shops and Gun shows. You might try those avenues if you want to inspect the rifle before you buy. I paid $125 for my #1 and $75 for my #4. The #4 was in very good condition and the #1 is a 1918 SSA that is in excellent shape (wood, metal, and bore).

My wife gave me some spending cash above and beyond the allowance due to some major renovations I did at our cabin, so I just treated myself to one of AIMs MK4's. I will post about it's condition after I get it, but they said the bores are in great shape and I am optimistic. AIM sent me a sweet Hex, Tula receiver 91-30 a while back, and everything I have gotten from them has been as-advertised.

Don't get your hopes too high, goalie. My #4 showed up today, and I guess I can say that at least I can continue to work on my rifles. Mines soaked in cosmo, the stock has been repaired in two places, the exterior metal is worn, there's no blueing left, but there's just enough of the black Ishy paint to be a pain in the backside.

On the upside, I guess if I want to restock with a Choate and scope it, I can, OR I can build it back to a nice refurb.

It's always nice to have options! :scrutiny:

ALL of Centerfire & AIM's rifles are Ishapore Indian reworks, some are RFI guns, some are brit, aussie and canadian receivers that have been reworked, but all of them are Indian rearsenals. They all have the dreaded "Ishy screw" through the middle of the stock.

The No1's there seem to be the better conditioned rifles, some with new barrels and decent finish. The No4's appeared to have been "scrubbed" or cleaned vigorously recently (some have wire brush marks and are missing the black paint uniformly, which is a giveaway). They are quite disappointing from what I've seen in person at AIM, and seen pictures of on the net.

I second Brian Dick at BDL for a good Enfield source. You might pay more, but his reputation is excellent and you know exactly what you're getting, he doesn't deal in bad guns.
