The wife and I are coming into a small "windfall" and we've each agreed we each get a grandish to "blow" on anything we want.

So here's question.
If you had $1,000 - $1,200 for a pistol you absolutely don't need, what would you buy? Antique? Classic? Rarity? Plastic, fantastic gun de jour? (Ammo for what you've got?)

I don't need a carry gun, have 5: S&W CS9, S&W 642, M&P EZ, S&W 4513 and S&W 6906
I don't need range guns: Collect S&W, Walther, and German Police Pistols and have a great BHP
I don't need .45acps, .22 target guns, or modern revolvers. I don't have a lot, but enough.

Could like a nice Walther PP or P88 compact; Walther WWII P38; Sig 210....

Prefer 9mm or .38S&W or .38 special, .32acp or .357.

So...here's $1,100 and you get an hour in the LGS or on Gunbroker...starting: NOW.

HK P7, you may have to search/bargain a bit to get one for $1200, but worth it, IMO.

You're not going to touch a P210 for $1200, lol.

Wouldnt recommend a wartime P38 if you are going to shoot it much, they are too prone to cracked slides. Ive had mixed experiences with the PP/ PPK platform...find a "good" one and youre all set, but there are plenty of bad ones out there. Recommend a postwar, Manurhin produced .32 PP if you go that rout.

I think a really nice P5 can be had within your budget- a kinda quirky, neat and uncommon pistol.

Tough to get a really nice Luger for $1100, but a "shooter grade" can be found for a bit less, maybe with enough left over for a reproduction shoulder stock.:)

I've paid $1K for only 1 gun in my life, a 101 year old 1911 from the widow of the veteran it was issued to (a reissue no doubt). It probably will retain or increase its value. A 1911 with a 3 digit serial number goes in a couple of hours on Gun Broker, the current bid is slightly over $50,000

I like SA revolvers. You could maybe find a nice old Colt SAA in the caliber of your choice. It's something you could shoot every now and then for fun, but it would likely be worth more money as time went on.

Can you still get an authentic Polish Radom for that much? They are supposed to be very nice shooters, and again it would likely appreciate in value.

Would that maybe buy a Python these days?

I have no idea what a "registered magnum" would cost.

I personally think a vintage gun would be the best bet. Certainly the best value, as valuations would go up. I have Smith revolvers, but collect mostly .38's, so I don't know going rates for .357's very well. I picked up a 90%-ish Model 13 for just under $600 last year, and thought that was a fair price. I'm thinking an even nicer condition vintage Model 19 with a box and papers could be had for 1k or less, though I can't guarantee it.

I like Tallball's SA idea. Maybe a Blackhawk or two in interesting calibers. In the same spirit, you might consider a center fire pistol cartridge lever action rifle. Henry would be a nice quality gun in that price range.

I also came into a windfall recently, and picked up a second mid-70's vintage Hi Power in good shape for $890. You said you have one, but my first one is almost too nice to shoot, so it'll be nice to have one that I don't woory so much about. Congrats and best wishes.

I have a mental "want" list of firearms that has a few handguns on it. In that price range I had listed a CZ Shadow 2, and I could probably locate a brace of Vaqueros in .45 LC. If I could locate a DW 1911 in that price range that would also fit my bill. The CZ is actually coming off the want list as I found a killer deal on one and should have it transferred on Wednesday.

I was thinking the same thing...not enough for a P7 or a P210 but could get a Walther P5 and it would be just the ticket!

I did actually see a cosmetically challenged P7 at a local pawnshop recently for a grand. I left, drove a bit, remembered that they do layaway, turned around......and it was gone.

Sill beating my head against the wall for that one!

Real Simple. I would buy a Smith and Wesson Model 27. You can get a nice one for 1k. Super accurate and normally come with a very smooth action. If not it can be slicked up by any decent gunsmith. Its as beautiful as any gun out there and you can't look at the checkered top strap without almost drooling. Only decision to make is the barrel length. I have a 3.5", a 6" and an 8 3/8" and like them all very much. In my opinion and I've been shooting revolvers over 40 years, in the 1K range, you can't go wrong with a model 27. For me personally, I'd go with the 8 3/8" but it is too long for most people. Only fun in shooting is off a bench. Too barrel heavy to shoot offhand. So decide between the 6 and 3.5 and your decision is one of the easiest you'll have to make and I will guarantee you will not be sorry.

I would buy a Beretta 85 in nickel, that would put me at about $900 and rest in extra mags.

C96 "Broomhandle" Mauser.

My P38 is just a police issue... it is still a fun shooter.
